How To Color Your Roots Like A Pro

by Deanna Pai

Hair color isn't one-and-done. (If only.) Depending on your color, it can require some maintenance, from touching up your roots to swapping out your shampoo for formulas made specifically for color-treated hair. And, if you're one of the #blessed few whose hair grows at an insanely fast pace, you may be going to get your roots touched up all the freaking time. Ain't nobody got time for that.

That's why we partnered with Schwarzkopf to shed light on coloring your own roots. Even if you're basically an at-home hair color profesh, doing your own roots at home still requires a different technique. Like everything else in this world, coloring your roots successfully comes down to the right timing, which is about 20-25 minutes. If you leave it on for too long, the color will be darker, look flat, and mismatch the rest of your hair. If you rinse it too quickly, though, you won't get the coverage you need. So make sure to read the instructions (and check them twice) to ensure you get the exact color you're looking for. No matter what, DIYing your root touch-ups is worth the work, since it saves you both time and money.
