Why Is Anna Wintour At The Tonys?

by Kara McGrath

If there's one thing Anna Wintour's brilliant at (aside from truly nailing the idea of a signature haircut), it's keeping us guessing. First she's bringing back the flip phone, and now the Editor in Chief of Vogue's got us all wondering: Why is Anna Wintour at the Tony Awards? I mean, sure, high society types do tend to partake in a Broadway show or two, but the theater isn't exactly known for haute couture.

Well, as it turns out, that's precisely the reason why Wintour was at the awards Sunday night: to impart a bit more style into the ceremony. According to the New York Times, Wintour attended the 2014 Tony Awards, then, along with KCD, offered up her notes to make it more organized — and more fashionable, of course (the New York Post reported that Wintour was specifically not a fan of all the " mermaid fishtail strapless sequin gowns "). In addition to suggestions for making the carpet less cluttered, Wintour and KCD worked together to get the leading actors for nominated productions into free designer clothes. If you hook up all the nominees with gowns from the likes of J. Mendel and Billy Reid, you're pretty much guaranteed an invite to the event.

From the looks of the carpet this year, I'd say her methods worked.
