Lupita's Globes Dress Definitely Made a Statement

by Kara McGrath

Guys, guys, guys. We have to talk about Lupita Nyong'o's dress at the 2015 Golden Globes. Yeah, the flowers are a lot. Yeah, purple is a difficult color to pull off. And, yeah, she looks absolutely freaking perfect. As I sit typing in 20 degree New York City weather, the ombre Giambattista Valli gown feels like the exact thing we needed to remind us that other, warmer seasons do indeed exist. She might not have been nominated for a Globe (though she is presenting), but she's definitely a contender to win the red carpet.

After the flapper dress/fishing net she wore to the 2014 Met Gala, we've pretty much grown to expect a statement-making gown on Nyong'o at every single event — just one more reason to love her unconditionally, in my opinion. She favors bright colors, bold prints, and as many embellishments as she can get away with, aka the wardrobe we're all too scared to fully commit to. Nyong'o's bright red, caped dress from the 2014 Globes would be basically impossible to beat, but this violet number easily takes a close second. With a gown like this, you don't need many accessories, and Nyong'o perfectly topped off the look with simple diamond drop earrings and an understated clutch.
