Max Greenfield's 'AHS: Hotel' Fate Might Be Sealed

by Allison Piwowarski

We need to talk about Max Greenfield. On the American Horror Story: Hotel premiere, Max Greenfield (Gabriel on AHS) — everyone's favorite douche-y roommate Schmidt on New Girl — was raped by a dildo-wearing, gooey, faceless Addiction Demon. Yeah. I never thought I'd type those words either. But alas, here we are, wondering if Max Greenfield is dead on AHS: Hotel , or if Gabriel is just taking a quick catnap underneath the bed in room 64, while looking incredibly, incredibly dead.

Let's rehash what went down for Gabriel in Hotel Cortez. He checked in, Sarah Paulson's character Sally called "dibs" on him to Iris (Kathy Bates), and from there, the situation went straight to hell in a handbasket. First, like many of the other characters on the show, it becomes apparent that Gabriel is a junkie. He goes into room 64 and shoots up. Then — THEN — he starts to imagine the maid and the Addiction Demon in the room. The Addiction Demon begins to rape him, and Sally appears, telling Gabriel to "say 'I love you, Sally,' and it will all be over." Gabriel does as he is told, and passes out. Or dies. That's the question, isn't it?

While it is possible that the Addiction Demon killed Gabriel via drill-bit dildo (gah), there's also the chance that Gabriel might have overdosed when he shot up upon walking into room 64. We know that Sally is (probably) dead from that rough "fall" she took courtesy of Iris, so it is possible that she appeared when Gabriel was already dead and claimed her "dibs."

Later in the episode, Detective John Lowe (Wes Bentley) checks into room 64 because the Ten Commandments Killer told him to go there. While there, Detective Lowe lays down on the bed and takes a nap. Sure, it was wildly unprofessional, but I guess he's got a lot going on in his life! His son was abducted five years ago, he is investigating a murder, he just had to deal with the rude Hotel Cortez staff. Hell, get this guy a martini, stat! He needs a break.

Sorry, I digress.

While Detective Lowe is in bed, thinking about all the crazy sh*t he's got going on around him — probably contemplating moving to some sleepy beach town where he can open up a banana stand or something — the camera pans to under the bed, where we see a dead Gabriel. Like, this guy is for sure dead.

Now, that doesn't mean that Gabriel is going to be MIA from the rest of the season. If the "everyone is dead" theory is right, Gabriel has a chance of becoming a life resident of Hotel Cortez — like Suite Life of Zack & Cody, except there's a dildo-wearing demon on the loose.
