20 Years Ago, Amanda Seyfried Exposed Her Bra At The Mean Girls Premiere
So fetch.
It’s been two whole decades since Mean Girls came out. (Let that sink in.) The film may be considered an early aughts relic, but its influence in pop culture and fashion continues to permeate the zeitgeist, especially with retro trends coming back around. Slogan tops, micro-minis, and a whole lotta pink are among the styles that became instant wardrobe staples after the movie’s release.
Much like the popularity hierarchy at North Shore High, there was a similar one for the most stylish. Regina George, for example, was the trendsetter, influencing how the entire student population dressed. (Army pants and flip-flops, anyone?)
Off screen, however, all the cast members had an equally chic sense of style. Case in point: At the Mean Girls premiere, Amanda Seyfried (aka the film’s ditzy-but-beloved Karen Smith) turned heads in a spicy look about 20 years before its time.
Amanda’s See-Through LBD
Before Mean Girls, Seyfried had two IMDb credits to her name and had virtually no experience with red-carpet dressing. When she attended the film’s New York premiere, however, she turned heads in an LBD that was all sorts of daring.
The date was April 23, 2004. She wore a high-neck sleeveless number with ruched details around the waist and décolletage. It wasn’t as glamorous as what she wears to fashion events these days, but it was fashion-forward just the same. Though the length (a midi) was “demure,” the black polka-dot, high-neck dress was diaphanous and exposed her brassiere, a bold choice at the time.
Going for a minimalist vibe, she paired the look with strappy criss-cross mules and a white clutch.
During a February 2022 appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, the talk show host took Seyfried down memory lane and showed her a pic from the big event. “I didn’t know any of the rules, so I was wearing a white bra and black underwear and no slip,” she said of her premiere style, noting that she paid for it herself — $600. “Humble beginnings,” she added.
S/O To Her Costars
Seyfried wasn’t the only one out of the cohort to rock a risqué look. Lindsay Lohan, who played leading lady Cady Heron, wore a Marilyn Monroe-inspired halter number with a deep plunging neckline. Like Seyfried, she paired her textured dress with strappy sandals.
Lacey Chabert also rocked a see-through LBD. Unlike Seyfried’s semi-A-line skirt, Chabert’s rocked a fitted midi with sheer lace panels across the waist. The dress was so lingerie-coded, another style before its heyday.
The Plastics will always be style icons.
