Creating space for Black-owned brands to thrive has become a global conversation. However, only 3% of brands at major beauty retailers are Black-owned — and that fact hasn't gone unnoticed. The Racial Bias in Retail Study commissioned by Sephora found that 78% of shoppers across the retail industry don't see enough brands owned by or made for people of color. Unfortunately, getting these products on shelves is difficult because Black business owners face additional challenges, especially when it comes to funding. A recent study found that less than 1% of venture capital funding goes to Black-owned businesses.

With these statistically proven roadblocks, how do Black-owned businesses thrive? Enter the 15 Percent Pledge, a non-profit advocacy organization founded by designer and entrepreneur Aurora James urging major retailers to commit 15% of their shelf-space to Black-owned businesses. As the call to action went out across the organization's social media platforms, Sephora was the first major retailer to commit this pledge.
