Jim Broadbent Drops A Clue About His 'GoT' Role
Dust off your magnifying glasses and those hats that Sherlock Holmes wears, because Game of Thrones Season 7 is looming closer and closer. And fans have some work to do, i.e figuring out every plot twist before it happens. Beware, there are Season 6 spoilers ahead. For example, in a recent interview with ScreenCrush, actor Jim Broadbent (Professor Slughorn from Harry Potter) revealed a little something-something about his character. As a constant theorizer of the GoT franchise, I have to wonder, will Jim Broadbent play Maester Marwyn?
I'll slow down for those of you who haven't dove into the Song of Ice and Fire series. The well-traveled Maester Marwyn is a guy mentioned consistently in the book series in various ways — in A Game of Thrones, Mirri Maz Duur tells Daenerys that the maester taught her about human anatomy; then in A Storm of Swords, crazy Qyburn shares with Jaime Lannister that Marwyn is the only maester on the same page as him about ghosts; finally in A Feast for Crows, he has a little chat with Samwell Tarly in Oldtown about White Walkers. At the end of the book, the archmaester is headed to meet up with Daenerys Targaryen and tell her a mysterious something. Based on that backstory, it seems likely Marwyn might just play a big part in upcoming events.
While Broadbent didn't give away much about his mysterious role, he did tell ScreenCrush he would portray "a maester, an archmaester. I’m an old professor character." He also claimed that he "did five episodes. I did sort of one major scene in each episode," and he "didn’t get to go out on location.” All these tidbits certainly seem like the perfect cocktail for the guy who's going to explain things to Samwell Tarly in the Citadel.
Even more revealing is the fact that at the end of Season 6, Tarly was hanging out in a giant library waiting for an archmaester so that he can become the maester at the Wall. It wouldn't be that shocking if the archmaester Sam was waiting for happened to be Marwyn — and it would be even less surprising if the two continued to hang out in the library for each of their scenes together in the entire shortened Season 7.
Now that you've found your magnifying glasses and deerstalker (?) hats, keep them at the ready. Liam Cunningham (Ser Davos Seaworth) let it slip that GoT Season 7 might premiere in July, so we've got a lot of sleuthing to do until then.
