How Jeff Goldblum Totally Steals The Show In 'Thor: Ragnarok'

by Angelica Florio

Spoilers for Thor: Ragnarok ahead. One of the most exciting parts of Thor: Ragnarok is the introduction of Jeff Goldblum's blue eyeliner-wearing character, the Grandmaster. The only previous reference made to the character was in the Guardians of the Galaxy 2 credits scenes, which served as both a preview for his role in Ragnarok and a way to completely charm audiences, because that's what Goldblum does best. Seeing as he plays a big part in Ragnarok and is included in the end credits scene, it's super likely that Jeff Goldblum's Grandmaster will be in more Marvel movies. Considering what a powerful character the Grandmaster is, plus how fun Goldblum plays him, the chances that the 65 year-old actor will show up in another MCU movie are high.

Still, Ragnarok gives reason to believe that Goldblum might be out of the game, if that's even possible considering that the Grandmaster basically created the game. In the movie's second post-credits scene, Goldblum is shown recovering after Thor's escape, but he's in an unfavorable position on a planet called Sakaar, which is literally filled with trash. The people he previously controlled have rebelled against him, and seeing this, The Grandmaster nervously exclaims, "The revolution has a been a huge success!” It's pretty clear that he's lost the fight, even though he claims that "it's a tie" in a way that seems to parody current politics.

If he makes it out alive, though, here's hoping he returns to the MCU. Goldblum has a good track record with sequels, especially lately. In 2016 the actor reprised his role as David Levinson from 1996's Independence Day for its sequel made 20 years later, Independence Day: Resurgence. It was also recently announced that Goldblum would play Ian Malcolm again in the upcoming installment to the Jurassic World series, called Fallen Kingdom. Even if you never saw him in the moves, you've likely seen the recent re-emergence of a certain shirtless Goldblum scene from Jurassic World that's currently floating around the internet as a meme. And so considering how many of Goldblum's recent roles pay homage to his past roles in either reboots or sequels, it's pretty likely that the actor would be willing to bring back his role from Ragnarok for another Marvel movie.

It also helps that Goldblum is a fan of both Marvel and Ragnarok's director, Taika Waititi. In a recent interview with Vulture, Goldblum gushed about what he likes about each of his costars and the director, and it turns out, he has a lot of great things to say about everyone involved in the film. Aside from Goldblum saying that Waititi is "strikingly handsome" and "a fine figure of a man" to Vulture, Goldblum also praised Waititi in an interview with Collider, in which the actor said, "He's unique and very particular and has a robust and vivacious and brilliant comic vision." In the same interview, Goldblum also raved about Marvel Studios is, saying, "They know how to do this... Somehow they're flexible and loose and trusting." Based on all of these reviews, it sounds like Goldblum would be thrilled to be in another movie.

Considering how powerful the Grandmaster is, it's unlikely that the end of Ragnarok is the end for him, but whether or not the colorful character will be back in another MCU film is yet to be determined. Luckily, Goldblum fans will be able to see him in the upcoming Jurassic World sequel, and who knows, maybe he'll end up reprising a role from one of his other beloved '90s movies soon. The world can't get enough of Goldblum, and more of the actor on-screen is never a bad thing.
