What Winter Holiday Activity You Should Do This Weekend Based On Your Zodiac Sign
The holiday season is in full swing, which means there are plenty of festive things to do to keep you busy just about every weekend between now and New Year’s. Not sure where to start? Why not use your zodiac sign to figure out which winter holiday activity you should do this weekend? I mean, you can definitely work your way through each and every thing on this list, regardless of your sign — but everyone’s got to start somewhere, right?
Festive winter activities are fun even if you don’t celebrate any particular holiday or if you’re not particularly religious. Ice skating? Good for everyone. Looking at pretty lights? Who doesn’t like that? Sharing tasty treats with all your favorite people? Awesome. Although I’m a Christmas celebrator myself, it’s not even really about that specific holiday; to me, December — the entire winter holiday season — is about the spirit of giving, of spending time with your friends and loved ones, and getting as warm and cozy as possible.
Not a believer in the zodiac? Eh, me neither. But it’s still often entertaining to check out what your horoscope thinks might be in your future — and check out what kinds of activities the personality traits your sign supposedly bestows upon you might right up your alley. Here some ideas to start. 'Tis the season, right?
Aries (March 21 – April 19): Go Ice Skating
Aries love a challenge, and puttering around a sheet of pure ice on thin little knife blades attached to the bottoms of your shoes is nothing less than that. Of course, if you’re already a champion skater, you could see if anywhere near you gives lessons in ice cross downhill, an extreme winter sport that honestly looks like downhill skiing crossed with a roller coaster… except that you don’t ride in a car or on skis. You do it with a pair of skates strapped to your feet. Yikes.
Taurus (April 20 – May 20): Bake A Seasonal Treat
Those born under the sign of the Bull are often said to enjoy “harvesting the fruits of their labor.” There’s no better way to do that than by heading to the kitchen, where, after a bit of effort, you’ll end up something tasty to eat and share. Gemini (May 21 – June 20): Celebrate At A Holiday Festival Or Fair
It’s not that Geminis are two-faced; it’s just that their preferences may change fairly quickly, especially when it comes to being sociable. That’s why heading to a holiday festival is the perfect activity for folks born under this sign: You can interact with people if you like, or just sit back and observe — and you can immediately switch back and forth between both strategies as your mood shifts.
There are a huge range of types of festivals you can checkout, too. In Boston, for example, the Museum of Fine Arts’ Festival of Lights celebrates Chanukah with musical performances, art exhibits, and more. Meanwhile, the Smithsonian Holiday Festival in D.C. includes everything from cooking demonstrations to children’s television holiday displays.
Cancer (June 21 – July 22): Take Yourself To The Ballet
With your artistic leanings and love of alone time, Cancer, taking yourself on a holiday date to the ballet is just your speed. There’s The Nutcracker, of course, but that’s far from the only seasonally festive ballet that exists; The Snow Queen might also be an option. Check your local ballet companies and schools and see what's onstage right now.
Traditional ballet not your speed? Look around for some variations and riffs on whatever theme strikes your fancy. When it comes to The Nutcracker, for example, there’s a hip-hop take on the story playing in Washington, D.C. this season. Additionally, Mark Morris’ modern dance interpretation, The Hard Nut, is being performed in a huge number of cities throughout the month of December. Or, if you don't want to leave home, Ovation is playing their annual Battle of the Nutcrackers again this year.
Leo (July 23 – Aug. 22): See A Holiday-Themed Comedy Show
'Tis the season, which means a lot of the improv troupes and other comedy groups in and around your hometown will likely be dusting off their holiday best — which, of course, is perfect for fiery, energetic Leos. In Chicago, try The Annoyance Christmas Pageant, and in Southern California, Dysfunctional Holiday Review is on the bill this year. Heck, if you’ve got a TimeOut for your city, all you need to do is check that and you’re all set.
Virgo (Aug. 23 – Sept. 22): Have A TV Holiday Specials Marathon With Your Friends
Virgos are A-plus organizers, so there’s no one better to plan the programming for a seasonally festive marathon of TV holiday specials. The Rugrats Chanukah special? Done. A Charlie Brown Christmas? Put it on the list. Everybody Hates Chris’ Kwanzaa episode? Yep. Festivus, Seinfeld-style? You got it. Take it away, Virgo.
Libra (Sept. 23 – Oct. 22): Volunteer For A Good Cause
Civic-minded Libras like to help out at any time, but around the holiday season, that drive very well might kick into high gear; it’s a time for giving, after all. Volunteer for whatever cause fires you up the most — at a soup kitchen, for a political campaign, at an animal shelter, for a clinic, you name it. Not sure where to start? These pointers on how find places to volunteer might help.
Scorpio (Oct. 23 – Nov. 21): Surprise Someone With A Random Gift
Scorpios’ tendency toward secrecy is often one of their weaknesses, but when it comes to planning surprises, it can be a real strength. In the season of giving, now is a terrific time to harness that unique talent and surprise a friend or loved one with a gift they’re truly not expecting. It doesn’t have to be huge or expensive; it is, as they say, the thought that counts. It’s worth it to see someone’s face light up with delight when they're not expecting it, right? Sagittarius (Nov. 22 – Dec. 21): Window Shop At A Holiday Market
The travelers of the zodiac, Sagittarius folk, will love the variety of things to see, do, and experience at a holiday market. Whether you’re getting your holiday shopping done or just wandering around and seeing the sights, there’s plenty to keep your favorite Sagittarius occupied. Bonus: A lot of holiday markets take place outside, giving this nature-loving sign one more reason to hit up their local options. Try searching for “holiday market near me” or “winter market near me” and see what comes up — you might be surprised at the variety of options available.
Capricorn (Dec. 22 – Jan. 19): Hit Up A Holiday Event At Your Favorite Museum
As lovers of tradition, music, and craftsmanship, museum-going should be in every Capricorn’s bag of tricks — and the holidays are an excellent time to check out what your local museums have on offer. Whether you just want check out a cute program introducing the kids in your life to holiday traditions and celebrations from all over the world or whether you’re up for shelling out the big bucks to attend a fancy holiday gala, odds are the museums near you have plenty of seasonal programming you can take advantage of. Look around and see what’s what!
Aquarius (Jan. 20 – Feb. 18): Go On A Hot Chocolate Crawl
Pub crawls can be fun, but they can also be kind of overwhelming. What if, instead, you looked into all the best places to get hot chocolate in your area, grabbed a bunch of friends, and did your own festive crawl? It’s the perfect solution for people born under Aquarius who might like having fun with their friends but get easily exhausted by huge gatherings. Or, if you’re not feeling the whole venturing outside thing, have a few of your favorite people over and experiment with making a few different types of hot chocolate at home instead. These tasty (and boozy!) recipes should give you some inspiration.
Pisces (Feb. 19 – March 20): Go Look At Some Pretty Holiday Lights
Celebrations for all sorts of winter holidays involve brightly colored lights, so there’s likely no shortage of ways to check 'em out near you— and it’s the perfect activity for romance-loving Pisces. If you’re up for something larger in scale, your local zoo might have a ZooLights festival running right now. You can also check out options like Enchanted: Forest of Light in LA, or if you live on the water, there might be a boat parade on the schedule. You can even just walk around your own neighborhood and admire your neighbors' decorations. Don’t forget to bundle up!
