You Totally Missed This Azor Ahai Clue In 'Game Of Thrones'
Now that the long-awaited Season 7 of Game of Thrones is upon us, theorizing is at an all-time high. Book fans have long whispered of a prophecy that suggests that the reincarnation of a mythical warrior will return to save the realm from the White Walkers. And, some eagle-eyed fans may have spotted a huge reveal about this prophecy hidden in a very innocuous photo that hints that Azor Ahai will be in Season 7 of Game of Thrones.
An extremely astute fan on Reddit, itsjayrr, noticed that in a still from the season, Gilly and Sam are reading books together at the Citadel. In Gilly's hands is a book that has text seemingly taken directly from George R.R. Martin's history of Westeros, The World of Ice and Fire. The page reads:
It is also written that there are annals in Asshai of such a darkness, and of a hero who fought against it with a red sword. His deeds are said to have been performed before the rise of Valyria, in the earliest age when Old Ghis was first forming its empire. This legend has spread west from Asshai, and the followers of R'hllor claim that this hero was named Azor Ahai, and prophesy his return. In the Jade Compendium, Colloquo Votar recounts a curious legend from Yi Ti, which states that the sun hid its face from the earth for a lifetime, ashamed at something none could discover, and that disaster was averted only by the deeds of a woman with a monkey's tail.
The legendary warrior Azor Ahai, also known as The Prince that was Promised, was the one who defeated the White Walkers when they last came around some 8,000 years ago — and he seems pretty necessary again now. There are other pieces to the prophecy of his return that include Azor Ahai waking dragons from stone and wielding a sword called Lightbringer that was forged with a loving wife's heart. (Hey, this is Game of Thrones, there always has to be a supreme bummer caveat to any great prophecy.)
So, the fact that the show included this part of text about Azor Ahail means that it could be significant. After all, Game of Thrones doesn't really do throwaway scenes or extraneous details. The fact that Azor Ahai is even mentioned here is huge for Season 7.
There have been a lot of fan theories surrounding who could possibly be the reincarnation Azor Ahai. Jon Snow and Daenerys Targaryen seem to be the frontrunners and there are great arguments for either of them to be the candidate. Of course, Melisandre had been banking hard on Stannis Baratheon being the Prince that was Promised, but she doesn't exactly have a stellar record when it comes to prophetic decision making.
This little photo clue is amazing news for fans who have been waiting for this prophecy to make an appearance in a big way. If this hint means anything, Season 7 of Game of Thrones is totally worth that long wait.
