The Marvel’s ‘Runaways’ Trailer Will Take Your Excitement To The Next Level

by Kristie Rohwedder

Rejoice, Marvel Cinematic Universe fans, because the first official trailer for Marvel's Runaways is here in all of its dinosaur eyeball glory, and it's yet another reason to get excited for the upcoming series. And just like the awesome teaser that Hulu oh-so-kindly dropped earlier this month, the new preview includes a ear-catching piece of music. Clamoring for information on the song from the trailer for Marvel’s Runaways? Look no further: It's “Sea Castle” by Purity Ring. The track can be found on the duo’s 2015 record Another Eternity.

Slated to premiere on Hulu on Tuesday, Nov. 21, Marvel’s Runaways is based on Brian K. Vaughan’s comic book series of the same name. The show follows a group of teens who band together to fight the Pride, a team of criminals who moonlight as bioengineers, cult leaders, and successful businesspeople. Here’s where things get complicated/interesting/fit for a comic book: The members of the Pride have children, and those children are the members of the Runaways. Rather than follow in their parents’ footsteps and take on the real family business, Alex (Rhenzy Feliz), Nico (Lyrica Okano), Karolina (Virginia Gardner), Gert (Ariela Barer), Chase (Gregg Sulkin), and Molly (Allegra Acosta) decide to form their own crime-fighting faction. Oh, and they get some help from a genetically engineered Deinonychus called Old Lace.

"Sea Castle" by Purity Ring is a pretty perfect fit for the trailer: It's a terrific jam, it complements the tension and drama and intrigue, and it involves a device that could totally be something from a sci-fi movie or a comic book character's lair. The centerpiece of Purity Ring's sound is a customized contraption that's both a musical instrument and a light show that sort of looks like several of the scepters from the Runaways trailer arranged just so.

In the trailer, the six high school students find out the hard way what it is their parents actually do when they say they’re getting together for a charity meeting. And “find out the hard way” sure is an understatement: The group stumbles upon the Pride sacrificing someone in a secret room of a mansion, a moment that apparently drives Alex, Nico, Karolina, Gert, Chase, and Molly to become a group of superheroes who want to put an end to their parents' villainy; the teens apparently didn't inherit their parents' thirst for evil and mayhem. The Runaways are eager to distance themselves from their parents, hone their powers, and take down the Pride. And the Pride would’ve gotten away with it too, if it weren’t for their meddling kids.

The good tunes in both the teaser and the trailer are only a glimpse of what’s to come, music-wise: As show co-creator Josh Schwartz recently told IGN, legendary music supervisor Alexandra Patsavas lent her talents to Runaways. If you’ve watched The O.C., Scandal, Riverdale, or Grey’s Anatomy, then you know that this is a big deal. Schwartz said,

“Yeah, it's going to be a good mix and Alex Patsavas, who's been our music supervisor on everything, is our music supervisor on this. Even when we started up, each character kind of had their own distinct playlist and their own sound and I think there's going to be a lot of cool music on the show.”

Runaways was co-created for Hulu by Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, the unstoppable duo that has that has worked together on shows such as The O.C., Gossip Girl, Hart of Dixie, and The Carrie Diaries. And as Schwartz pointed out to IGN, Patsavas was behind those shows’ soundtracks.

Tell your ears to suit up, because come Nov. 21, Runaways will be here with what will almost certainly be a fantastic soundtrack in tow.
