Marvel’s ‘Cloak & Dagger’ Trailer Sets The Tone For The Show

Get excited, TV fans. The first trailer for Marvel's Cloak & Dagger dropped on Wednesday, and it's everything I could've hoped for. Coming to Freeform early 2018, the show will follow the lives of superhero duo Cloak (aka Tyrone "Ty" Johnson), played by Aubrey Joseph, and Dagger (aka Tandy Bowen), played by Olivia Holt. The two fall in love after discovering one another's supernatural abilities, and they decide to fight crime as a team. The preview has the perfect mix of intimacy, danger, and teenaged angst, and the song featured in the Cloak & Dagger trailer is the perfect soundtrack for this gritty show.

Performed by indie/alternative group Mansionair, the moody and mysterious sounds of their 2016 hit "Easier" blend seamlessly with Cloak & Dagger's complicated plot. The almost two-minute trailer for the new series provides a look into the very beginnings of the crime-fighting duo and how they're navigating the world in present time — and their stories are so intriguing. As if high school isn't hard enough on its own, these two have to battle with their traumatizing pasts, and even more traumatizing presents at the same time. They're just waiting for an escape, and I'm hopeful that they'll find just that in each other.

If I didn't know any better, I'd assume Mansionair wrote "Easier" just for the Marvel television release. Within the first few seconds of the trailer, the group's heartfelt lyrics help to outline Ty and Tandy's relationship, saying, "Face up, untouched. Craving for some healing."

"I'm stuck, I'm stuck, I'm stuck here in my skin. I'm stuck, I'm stuck, I'm stuck with you," the song continues.

But, there's something else that makes this track even more perfect for the trailer: the group's cries for answers. Just before the chorus hits, Mansionair shares the underlying theme of the song: "Tell me it gets easier, tell me it gets easier. Tell me it gets easier, that I'll figure it out."

To me, "Easier" is all about looking for that something to relieve you from your baggage. And for Ty and Tandy, that breath of fresh air comes when they find one another. That's not saying that things are going to be all sunshine and rainbows for the duo, but at least they now have each other to help carry the burden. And that makes things a little bit "Easier."
