It's time to face facts: if you're not glad 2017 is finally coming to an end, then there's something seriously wrong with you. The year most reasonable people agree was horrible is mercifully almost over, and we all deserve to end the year on a high note, which is why Bridget Jones's Diary is the one New Year's Eve movie you have to stream this Dec. 31. Conveniently available on Netflix, Bridget Jones's Diary has everything one needs to say goodbye to 2017: laughs, loves, a hilariously authentic female protagonist, and, of course, wine. Lots and lots of wine.

Bridget Jones's Diary isn't a New Year's Eve movie in the strictest sense. Sure, it starts on Dec. 31, but the entire movie does not consist of a race to find that perfect New Year's Eve kiss. No, instead, the movie takes the audience on a year-long journey through Bridget's misadventures of the heart. It's all a part of her New Year's resolutions, which include starting a diary, losing 20 pounds, and finding "a nice sensible boyfriend." Most of you probably know how the rest of the movie turns out, but for those new to the Bridget Jones party, what follows are a lot of embarrassing moments, hot sex with a slimy boss, and adorably awkward romantic run-ins with a dashing family friend. It's hilarious, fun, romantic, and just real enough to keep you from wishing you were Bridget yourself. Here are the four main reasons why Bridget Jones's Diary deserves to be your NYE movie stream of 2017.

It's Romantic

New Years' Eve is a romantic holiday. Not necessarily because of who you spend it with or because of your relationship status, but because of the romance inherent in the idea of a new year. A new year means a fresh start, a time when anything is possible. It's a romantic idea no matter how you look at it, and Bridget Jones's Diary embraces that romance, and then some. It might inspire you to go out and date, or maybe it will solidify your belief that all men are trash. Either way, it'll help kick off your romantic 2018.

It's Funny

The news in 2017 was just awful. Not only was the news bad, it was also inescapable. Everywhere you turned, from Twitter, Facebook, to television, and pop radio, there was news — some of it good, a lot of it bad. Instead of ending 2017 wallowing in the horribleness of the past, enjoy a bit of laughter and set the right tone for 2018.

It Doesn't Take Place In 2017

One of the best things about Bridget Jones's Diary is that it was released in 2001 — that's an entire decade before anybody ever dreamed President Donald Trump could be a real thing. Oh, we were so innocent back then. Thanks to some movie-enabled time travel, we can all go back to that time for just a few hours and live in a world where your greatest worry was whether or not to wear a bunny costume to a party.

It's Perfect To Watch With Friends

If you're spending Dec. 31 having a movie night with a group of friends, this is the film to watch. It'll make you appreciate your pals even more, and you'll all get to celebrate together

What better way to say goodbye to 2017 with a movie that opens with a woman downing a bottle of wine on New Year's Eve? Spend your night the way you wished you had spent the entire year: laughing your ass off with Bridget.
