'The Incredibles 2' Will Give Elastigirl The Spotlight She Deserves
There has been a lot of exciting news coming out of the D23 Expo over the past two days, but one of the most intriguing bits of news has to be about The Incredibles 2. Excitingly, The Incredibles 2 will reportedly focus on Elastigirl, the matriarch of the Parrs, a superhero family unlike any other. This is an interesting turn for the film franchise, although it's not too surprising that Pixar — creators of female-led films Finding Dory and Brave — would move yet again in a female-led direction. For fans of The Incredibles, it may also feel like some of the power is rightfully being given back to Elastigirl. In the first film, she made it very clear that just because she is a woman, it doesn't mean she isn't as great a superhero as her male counterparts; now she has a chance to show fans exactly what she meant.
So, the word on the street about Elastigirl and The Incredibles 2 is that she will be driving the plot of the film. While it's known that The Incredibles 2 will pick up where the first film left off — with the appearance of the super villain The Underminer — this Elastigirl news is really the only other insight we have into the film's plot. According to ScreenRant's report on The Incredibles 2, Elastigirl will be front and center, fighting the bad guys while Mr. Incredible will stay home to take care of Jack Jack.
This is refreshing role reversal for the sequel, especially after The Incredibles delivered to audiences a stereotypical nuclear family. If you recall, Mr. Incredible was the main focus of the film, where the events of the movie were arguably driven by his broken relationship with super villain Syndrome and his midlife crisis about the doldrums of non-superhero life, which ultimately pulled his family into the story.
For all of this, Elastigirl was left to be the stay-at-home mom and the protector of her children. Giving the reins back to her for The Incredibles 2 will give audiences the chance to connect to the fiery, independent woman they saw in that faux-documentary which aired at the beginning of The Incredibles.
It may not be much to go on, but this news about Elastigirl really leading the charge is incredibly exciting, full-stop. Fans of hers have known for years that she's a badass superhero, but in The Incredibles 2, she'll get the chance to really show her full range of skills — without having to compete for the spotlight with her husband.
