These 21 Underrated Rom-Coms Should Be Next In Your Netflix Queue

by Allie Gemmill

There's a lot of rom-coms out there and understandably, when you're in the mood to watch one, you are probably going to choose the classics you've most likely seen hundreds of times. Pretty In Pink, When Harry Met Sally, You've Got Mail, Notting Hill — all of these are excellent choices. But there are plenty of underrated rom-coms you should see immediately, too. This is a genre bursting at the seams with great choices, so why choose the standbys?

Since the dawn of film, rom-coms have been made. There's so many that have hit theaters since the late '20s and '30s that you'd be remiss in skipping over some the classic but possibly overshadowed titles, even if you're an occasional movie-watcher. Have you ever seen It Happened One Night, which actually won an Oscar? Or Ball of Fire, which is full of great one-liners and some good jazz music? Maybe you want to take a trip through the '60s and '70s, where free love and offbeat romances were the order of the day, mirroring the free love vibes of the times and infusing it into familiar rom-com plots.

Falling in love has always been a popular subject in films. As it happens, the ways in which the following movies show their characters falling in love is as entertaining as the classic, but you're going to love the new and exciting ways in which they depict some classic rom-com archetypes.

Take that, You've Got Mail.

1. Can't Buy Me Love

Because it's tough not to fall a little bit in love with this oft-forgotten '80s rom-com and geeky Patrick Dempsey, who stars in ti.

2. Ball Of Fire

Screwball comedy great Barbara Stanwyck plays a jazz singer who's hiding out from her mobster boyfriend in a house filled with professors who are working on an encyclopedia. It's Snow White & the Seven Dwarfs for the Jazz Age and it's hilarious.

3. Pillow Talk

Doris Day and Rock Hudson play opposites who suddenly attract when one starts wooing the other over the telephone. It's a throwback to the bygone days over romance over a landline, but you'll love it anyway.

4. Leap Year

Leap Year deserves a second watch because it's a genuinely underappreciated but very, very good rom-com. Also, Matthew Goode is sporting an Irish accent and it doesn't get much better than that.

5. High Society

This remake of the better-known '40s rom-com The Philadelphia Story stars Frank Sinatra, Grace Kelly, and Bing Crosby — does it get any better than that?

6. Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist

An underappreciated but truly great '00s rom-com, Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist features great performances from Kat Dennings and Michael Cera, whose chemistry gets better and better with every scene.

7. Something Wild

Things get wild indeed for Melanie Griffith and Jeff Daniels in this off-beat rom-com.

8. Cactus Flower

Goldie Hawn stars as the girlfriend of a man who claims he's married and wants to get his wife's blessing before they get hitched. The problem is: he's not married.

9. The Break-Up

An unconventional rom-com by all counts, Jennifer Aniston and Vince Vaughn play an older couple trying to save their relationship.

10. How To Marry A Millionaire

Lauren Bacall and Marilyn Monroe star is this romp as young women attempting to find rich husbands with hilarious results.

11. Desk Set

One of Hollywood's great film pairings, Katharine Hepburn & Spencer Tracy, light up the screen as two older professionals falling in love while one is attempting to put the other out a job.

12. Shampoo

Warren Beatty stars with Goldie Hawn, Julie Christie, and a young Carrie Fisher in this sexy '70s comedy about an L.A. hairdresser with a complicated romantic life.

13. Life Or Something Like It

Everyone should see one of Angelina Jolie's best but most underrated performances in Life or Something Like It. In the film, Jolie plays a news reporter who is told she doesn't have much longer to live, sending her on a path to enjoy life as much as possible.

14. It Happened One Night

This Oscar-winning screwball comedy is a must-see, rom-com or not. Claudette Colbert stars as a spoiled heiress who wants to escape her moneyed lifestyle for something more rustic. She's accompanied by a journalist (played by a dashing Clark Gable), who's game to give her a peek at the simple life.

15. Broadcast News

Holly Hunter steals the show as Jane, an evening news producer who is juggling her climb up the corporate ladder with the affectionate but tangled advances of her new co-worker, a daft anchorman who's failed his way to the top (played by William Hurt). Oh, and to make matter more complicated, she soon finds herself in a love triangle with her close friend and coworker, played by Albert Brooks.

16. Morning Glory

You need to see Morning Glory ASAP. If Harrison Ford as a grouchy, Walter Cronkite-esque newsman doesn't reel you in, then the romantic storyline between a plucky career-woman (played by Rachel McAdams) and a handsome TV producer (played by Patrick Wilson) sure will.

17. Marriage Italian Style

This Italian comedy from the '60s is an unconventional pick, but trust me: with Italian greats Marcello Mastroianni and Sophia Loren once again starring as a married couple living in post-WWII Italy, you're going to be smiling from start to finish.

18. While You Were Sleeping

Arguably Sandra Bullock's most underrated rom-com, While You Were Sleeping is a vehicle for her as she gets romanced by Bill Pullman.

19. Take Care

Leslie Bibb and Thomas Sadoski star as Frannie and Devon, exes who must confront their failed relationship when Frannie gets hit by a car and needs Devon's help to recuperate.

20. Man Up

Lake Bell and Simon Pegg make for a thoroughly enticing rom-com duo in this story of a woman who pushes herself to take chances — and accidentally ends up on someone else's blind date.

21. Someone Like You

I'm not sure what's the best part about Someone Like You: Ashley Judd's hilarious performance as a single woman trying to navigate her messy love life or Hugh Jackman as her love interest and co-worker who likes to eat Chinese food without a shirt on.

If you have somehow managed to not see any of these rom-coms because you've been watching Notting Hill or 10 Things I Hate About You on endless repeat, do yourself a favor: sniff these rom-coms out and watch ASAP.
