Why You Need To Lay Off Selena Gomez For Reuniting With Justin Bieber

2017 has been a rocky year for celebrity relationships, but one former power couple has turned the tide and, apparently, gotten back together: Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber. Most recently they were even seen kissing during a hockey game. So, if you had any doubts before, it looks like things are moving right along for the two's renewed relationship. Some people aren't happy to see that they are reuniting, especially considering the Canadian singer's troublesome ways. But, really, if Gomez is happy about her choice to be with Bieber, then people need to back off and let her freakin' live.

In case you've missed all of the news about "Jelena", the pair haven't just been hanging out only once or twice. The news that the singers were spending time together again came shortly before news broke that Gomez ended things with her boyfriend, The Weeknd. But after the split, Gomez and Bieber, who dated on and off from 2011 to 2015, immediately sparked rumors of a romantic reunion, rather than just a platonic one.

Most recently, Gomez was seen kissing the Biebz at one of his hockey games. This came after she cheered him on at another game. And, according to Hollywood Life, when the pair left the stadium that time, Gomez was wearing the same jersey that he was wearing while he played on the rink. Other than their hockey game outings, they were seen getting breakfast together and then going to church. They were also seen riding bikes and looked like they were having a great time together. Their reunion has prompted a very mixed response, and the Jelena naysayers aren't into this re-coupling because of some past drama between the couple and some drama from Bieber himself.

In the past, it had been thought that Bieber's cheated on Gomez. Bieber told i-D that his relationship with Gomez was hard at times. In regards to what led to their split, he said, "It's like trust and all this other stuff that starts messing with your mind. You're on the road. And there are beautiful women on the road. And you're just getting yourself into trouble."

But relationship troubles with Gomez weren't the only things that made headlines. There's been a slew of indecent acts that the singer's been trying to put behind him. He said Anne Frank would have been a "Bielieber" and peed into a mop bucket at a restaurant. He threw eggs at his neighbor's home. He was arrested in Florida in 2014 and later would "plead guilty to "misdemeanor careless driving and resisting arrest without violence charges," according to People. That kind of past would make anyone do a double take.

Bieber's past antics are part of why some people aren't into Gomez getting back with him. More than one person joked about Dua Lipa's song "New Rules" since it is about the "rules" to consider when potentially getting back together with your ex.

In the past, Gomez has opened up about her breakup from Bieber. When speaking to Refinery29 in 2015, her views on the split showed that there is more that has gone on between the two than the public knows. She said, "I think people are making it out to seem more tragic than it really was. We grew up together. We both make mistakes. That's it." She also said, quite maturely, "There's closure there in a very good, healthy way," and that she and Biebz were on good terms.

It's also been reported by a source in Us Weekly more recently that the two put the past aside when they reconnected: "They realized it was time to grow past their history and move on. They're grown up a lot in the past couple of years and are mature about the situation."

If Gomez can move past whatever drama may have been there with her and Bieber, isn't that a sign that others should, too? She would know best since she was the one who was actually in the relationship.

Gomez is old enough to make her own decisions. She's proven through the way she's talked about and handled her recent kidney transplant and battle with lupus that she's a strong woman. She can handle everything that comes her way, including this rekindled flame with Bieber. That strength shows that she can tell what is best for herself. She can choose was is right for her, no matter whether it involves her illness or her romantic life, and she should be allowed to make that choice.

If we say what she should and should not do in terms of her relationship, that's like taking away Gomez's agency in being able to choose what's best for herself. It shows a lack of trust on the relationship naysayers parts that she can make this decision on her own. If she wants to be with Bieber, good for her. As long as she's making the choice for herself, and she's OK with that choice, nothing else should really matter.

It might be easy to look at the couple's past (and Bieber's antics on their own) as a way to say they shouldn't be together now, but that's not taking into account what Bieber and Gomez's relationship is today. All you have to do is look at the photos of the two together to see how happy they are.

They're exactly right. As long as she's happy, what's the big deal with them reuniting? It seems as though the two singers are having a great time in each other's company. They both seem to be enjoying themselves, as the photos of them hanging out would suggest.

There's no need to get Dua Lipa on the phone here, people. Gomez is an adult and can make her own decisions, even if her decision to date Bieber again might not please everyone.
