Spoilers ahead! Clay, Tony, and their significant others literally drove off into the sunset at the end of Season 1, but that hasn't stopped fans of Netflix's enthralling teen drama 13 Reasons Why from speculating about what will happen next. However, I think it's safe to say no one is more excited for 13 Reasons Why Season 2 than Selena Gomez. During an interview with Seattle radio station Movin' 92.5, Gomez, who is an executive producer on the series, revealed she's been hanging out in the writers' room, and she's psyched for everyone to see Hannah's story continue. She said,
"I think for season 2, we elaborate more on some of those questions and the stories and the resolution, if you will, of what some of these kids have gone through so — and are going through. I was in the writers' room the other day, and they're working so hard, and it's going to come together. I was sitting there at the table, like, 'Wait, what happened?!' Almost like freaking out."
Gomez is well aware of the controversy the show's graphic content has stirred up among mental health advocates and parents. She also seems keenly aware that 13 Reasons Why has led to some hard, but important discussions between teens about bullying, self-harm, and depression. The executive producer sounds like she's looking forward to seeing the show delve even deeper into the private lives of its young characters in Season 2.
One thing that took even Gomez by surprise during Season 1 was the show's immediate popularity. In her interview, she revealed she never expected such a powerful response from viewers. She said,
"I’m so excited for season 2. I think it’s going to be so exciting because you know, I didn’t expect the first to be as loud, if you will? I didn’t expect it to have the reaction that it did. It was amazing, and it was complicated, and there was a lot of stuff that came with it, and I understood what that meant."
It's too bad Gomez didn't reveal what Season 2 moment made her freak out. I can only hope it had something to do with Bryce facing repercussions for raping Hannah and Jessica. Knowing 13 Reasons Why, whatever moment has the actor so excited is sure to be one of many jaw-dropping developments. After all, both the show's fans and its detractors have to admit if there's one thing 13 Reasons Why has plenty of it's drama.
Given all of the threads left dangling at the end of Season 1, the writers likely still have an abundance of twists ahead, not only in Hannah's story, but in the stories of all of the teens who populate Liberty High. It's cool to know that as excited as you are to see the next chapter, Gomez, who helped bring the show to life, is just as psyched as everyone else.
