Grey's Anatomy fans, take note. In a recent interview with Entertainment Tonight, Kevin McKidd, who plays Owen Hunt, offered a glimmer of hope that Sandra Oh could return to Grey's Anatomy after all. This is music to the ears of fans of the long running series, who were sad to see Oh walk away from the role of Cristina Yang in 2014. And, in fact, the way that McKidd revealed that Cristina could return to Grey's Anatomy will give you some hope for her and Owen.
While promoting Grey's Anatomy's 300th episode, which is set to air on Nov. 9, McKidd told ET that he speaks to Oh "all the time." He then sweetly revealed that the actor became a bit envious after seeing his character move on with someone else on the show. “When my character got married to Amelia, she got kind of jealous and was like, ‘No, that’s not right!'" he shared. McKidd said that their conversation eventually led him to tell her that the only way to fix it is to have Cristina come back to make things right, to which he claims Oh responded, "Well maybe, maybe."
This tidbit of information should, obviously, be taken with a grain of salt, since it was merely a conversation between good friends. However, it should make fans hopeful that Oh may be open to the idea in the future. Like most Grey's Anatomy fans, McKidd seems to also be keeping his fingers crossed, telling ET, that he "hopes" Oh will consider a return to the series.
An original cast member of Grey's, which is now in its 14th season, Oh decided to end her run on the drama in order to focus on other aspects of her career. Upon announcing her decision to leave the show after 10 seasons, the actor told The Hollywood Reporter in 2013:
"Creatively, I really feel like I gave it my all, and I feel ready to let her go. It's such an interesting thing to play a character for so long and to actually get the sense that she wants to be let go as well. [Cristina] wants to be let go, and I am ready to let her go."
McKidd's character Owen, of course, went on to marry Amelia following Cristina's decision to accept a position in Switzerland, but it goes without saying that adding Cristina back into the fold would be a riveting storyline for the entire series. The mere thought of reintroducing Owen's ex-wife as she returns from abroad is a thrilling concept for many who have had a hard time letting go of Cristina and Owen's unresolved love affair. The moment would, at the very least, stir up some major controversy among the staff of Grey-Sloan Memorial Hospital.
Cristina and Owen's relationship has been beloved by the legions of faithful viewers who tune in to watch the award-winning medical drama. Even McKidd himself names the romance as his personal fave on the series, telling ET, "they were such a complex couple and really loved each other and were passionate. They really struggled through a lot.”
The chances of Oh returning to the character were looking pretty slim up until now — especially given the fact that she has maintained that she would not be coming back. When asked if she would consider a reprising her role on Grey's during an interview this past February, Oh told Access Hollywood Live, “At this point… No, I don’t think so.” However, McKidd's recent comments suggest that his former co-star may have experienced a change of heart about the topic in recent months.
It's hard to believe that Oh has been off the show for so many seasons already. She is undoubtedly missed — seemingly both on screen off screen.
