Georgy Kot is not only one of the most famous hairstylists in Russia, but is well-known worldwide for his masterclasses that are part styling demonstration, part entertainment. But if you haven't heard of him quite yet, it's only a matter of time before he and his... very particular set of skills show up on your Instagram feed. In addition to photos and videos of Kot dancing to Shania Twain, swinging wigs around, and wearing ties that have tiny versions of himself printed on them, the hair artist also shares clips of how he intricately weaves tiny strands together to create larger-than-life hair creations. It's hard to describe quite what I mean by hair weaving until you actually see the video, but when you do see it, it will blow your mind.
Huda Kattan shared a hair weaving video that Kot originally posted on his own account and, like most beauty videos that the popular makeup artist re-posts on her Instagram, it quickly gained millions of views. If you watch it once, it still makes you want to watch again and again — to try to figure out what's happening and why. Plus, it's hypnotizing. Sure, it's not the most practical look ever. In fact, it may actually be the least practical hairstyle of all time. But you have to give it to Kot — he found his very bizarre path to hair art fame and he has stuck to it. But hair weaving is only one of the remarkable things about the Adam Driver of hair (seriously, the resemblance is uncanny) and his Instagram account.
Kot posts clips of his creations (AKA the most in-your-face, giant hairstyles you've seen in a while) alongside videos of him being, well... him. Shot at his studio in Sochi, Russia, you'll often see Kot dancing to Shania Twain with dozens and dozens of wigs in the background. Neither the hair nor the dancing among wigs is something you see every day, so it pulls you in. The whole thing is very weird, and, sure, on paper honestly it's kind of frightening. But I love every second of it. I've told my boyfriend about Kot's videos. Random strangers I meet at parties. Every person I work with. I don't understand any of it, and I can't get enough.
As I started to look into Kot's fame, though, I started to understand his social media presence a little more. According to Modern Salon, this is a man that once stood on stage at a hair show in Los Angeles for seven hours straight demonstrating hair techniques. This isn't your run-of-the-mill, "I love what you do" type of passion. This is... well. This is Georgy.
In a world of Instagram-inspired sameness (the same videos, the same hairstyles, the same influencers), Kot has decided to just do him. Sure, it's all a little confusing, but it's also endearing. Kot's Instagram is just about being himself — part father, part hair artist, part... performer. None if it is traditionally "cool," but that's what makes Kot's Instagram presence so fun.
And while Kot's specialty hairstyles aren't exactly what you'd call relatable, everyday looks, they are absolutely amazing. With 1.5 million followers on Instagram, Kot's fanbase is already pretty large, and I'm fairly certain that will only keep growing as more people follow along and share with their friends.
I'm still not quite sure how Kot manages to weave hair quite like he does (or, to be honest, why this is a thing that he does at all), but I'll definitely keep tuning in to see what he creates next. Well, for that and, of course, the Shania Twain videos.
