As a lyric in Lin-Manuel Miranda's Emmy-winning song for the 2013 Tony Awards said, "There's a kid in the middle of nowhere who's sitting there living for Tony performances ... all of us up here tonight, we were that kid." At the 2017 Tony Awards, Rachel Bloom is that kid. I'm more convinced than ever that she should host the Tony Awards, too.
Don't you want a host that has absolutely no chill and nothing but love for all things Broadway? The only thing that would make it nerdier would be if Miranda himself joined her on stage. The Crazy Ex-Girlfriend star's stage reports that took the show to commercial breaks were full of bouncing enthusiasm. She's every theater kid ever — there's no better way to say it. Between describing performances as orgasmic, wearing tiny hats, and bowing down before Patti Lupone it was a geeky dream come true. Her Carnegie Mellon jab about being waitlisted killed, too.
Plus, before the show got started, Bloom took to Instagram for a series she's calling "Theater Kid Revenge Corner," in which she asked Broadway performers and creators to call out the people that didn't believe in them on their journey to success. Sure, awards shows are about gratitude most of the time.... but some people just need to be told to suck it.
Imagine the opening number! Imagine the insightful jokes that make you laugh, and then hang your head in shame. She's come a long way from this hilarious song about watching the Tony Awards, for sure. Let's make this happen, people.
