The MTV Video Music Awards have basically been ruled by Miley Cyrus performances and appearances in recent year's. Cyrus makes statements, whether that's by hosting the show itself, wearing something jaw-dropping on the red carpet, or performing memorable songs (or all three). At the 2017 MTV VMAs this year, Cyrus was accompanied on stage by her Baddie Gang — AKA a group of older people dancing alongside her. And, honestly, everyone looked so fab while doing it that it's arguable that the group was the best dressed of the whole evening.
The dancers, all wearing '50s-inspired outfits (which coordinated with Miley's look) danced with and behind Miley during the show, adding a fun, joyful feel to the singer's performance of her song "Younger." In case you needed any other proof that age means absolutely nothing when it comes to talent, fashion, or energy, this performance will convince you. Putting a group of people who aren't usually put in the spotlight center stage for a show aimed at people in their teens and early 20s is kind of powerful when you watch the performance in its entirety. Age really is just a number, and it shouldn't stop anyone from having the time of their lives on stage at the VMAs, clearly.
Given that there's such a prevalent notion in society today of what old people should and shouldn't wear (or what's "appropriate" or not), this performance is a reminder that older men and women should be able to wear anything they want. Whether that means '50s-inspired outfits on stage at the VMAs, a bikini, or anything else that breaks ageist stereotypes, it's important that we all encourage and support people to break these stereotypes.
No matter what their age, the joy of watching people do something that makes them happy is palpable when you watch the "Younger" performance.
That alone is exactly the reason why the Baddie Gang is perfectly deserve of the "best dressed" title for the evening.
