It's the gift that keeps on giving. First in December HBO confirmed a second season for Big Little Lies, which was originally supposed to be a one-season wonder. Now the fans are fanning themselves over the next treat: the addition of Meryl Streep to Big Little Lies Season 2. Twitter users reacted as you can imagine — with GIFs, memes, and overall excitement.
The announcement came the same day the Academy Awards announced Streep's 21st Oscar nomination for her leading role in Steven Spielberg's The Post. The three-time Oscar-winner might be in prime position for her first Emmy soon. At the 2017 Emmys, the series took home a haul of five major awards out of eight nominations.
The first season of Big Little Lies took place in the deceptively tranquil Monterey, California and centered around the tumultuous lives of three mothers, played by critically lauded Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon, and Shailene Woodley. (Kidman and Witherspoon won Emmys for Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress, respectively.) For the second season of Big Little Lies, the hit show will return to the beachfront town where Streep is set to appear as Mary Louise Wright, the mother of Alexander Skarsgård's Perry and mother-in-law to Kidman's Celeste.
Streep will reportedly earn $800,00 per episode, according to Variety, while her co-stars Kidman and Witherspoon earn raises of $1 million per episode. The airdate for Big Little Lies season two is unconfirmed, but TVLine reports that production may start in spring 2018.
Meanwhile, here's how fans are reacting to the news that Streep is joining the cast.
