In true 2016 fashion, the year ended with one more cringeworthy moment as Mariah Carey's New Year's Eve performance was marred by technical difficulties. Carey did her best to get the evening back on track, but even the star couldn't save the disastrous performance. Carey issued a statement on the New Year's Eve debacle on Twitter, and it sounds like she is still going to need some time to process what happened on stage that night.

"I haven’t really addressed the situation that happened on New Year’s Eve, and in time I will. But for now, I want everyone to know that I came to New Year’s Eve in New York in great spirits and was looking forward to a celebratory moment with the world," Carey said in her audio statement, released via Twitter.

Carey goes on to reveal she plans to take a break from social media and focus on herself and her family before her upcoming tour in March. The singer deserves to take some time to enjoy being with her loved ones. While the Internet immediately began making memes about Carey's performance, it does seem technical difficulties could to blame for the incident. Given the circumstances, Carey did her best to continue on despite the fact that the voice track for her song "Emotions" was missing, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

In her statement, Carey alleges there were difficulties with her earpiece as well, and that coupled with the noisiness of Times Square made it impossible for her to hear herself singing. For a veteran performer like Carey, the situation is understandably frustrating. There is only so much she could do if she could not hear herself during the performance.

"It’s not practical for a singer to sing live and be able to hear themselves properly in the middle of Times Square with all the noise, the freezing cold, the smoke from the smoke machines, and thousands of people celebrating, especially when their ear monitors are not working properly," Carey explained.

While Carey does note she is hurt, and promises to explain more about the details leading to the performance at a later date, she ends her message on a positive note by thanking her fans and friends for their support. Hopefully, Carey will be back on social media engaging with her fans soon, but for now her need to take a step back is one everyone should respect. Carey is a living legend, but even she is not immune to criticism. It is going to take her some time to process and move on from what happened on New Year's Eve.

There's no doubt when Carey performs again she will be back to owning the stage and wowing her fans as usual.
