By now, we've all come to expect a great red carpet look from Lorde. The singer can do no wrong when it comes to award shows, often arriving with her signature pale makeup, quirky style, and beautiful flowing hair. All together, this combo is decidedly Lorde — and it's a look the singer pulls off so well.

A great example is her her outfit from the Met Gala way back in 2015. Walking the carpet with designer Francisco Costa, Lorde looked amazing in a navy blue gown that featured a plunging, open back. She wore her long wavy hair down, and paired the look with a gorgeous smoky eye.

While she has shown us pops of color over the years, it seems Lorde always goes sticks with those Goth vibes, wearing dark gowns, that beautiful pale makeup, and a bold lip. But the VMAs on Sunday night, Lorde really went for something new.

On the red carpet, the singer — who is up for Artist of the Year — went super soft in a strapless lilac gown with a long feathered bottom. Her hair was shorter than usual (and it looked great, btw) and her makeup way lighter. Perhaps in an effort to try something new, Lorde wore matching lilac eyeshadow, a neutral lip, and seemingly nothing else. No necklace. No bracelet. And no bag.

And it looked great.

I'm loving her hair half up like this — something very different for the singer.

Seriously, the gown is incredible.

The new, softer look definitely suits her.
