Uncle Jesse Still Misses Michelle Tanner On 'Full House,' So It’s OK If You Do Too

by Sabienna Bowman

Will the latest Instagram post celebrating the 30-year anniversary of Full House make you cry? You got it, dude. John Stamos' Instagram tribute to Michelle Tanner is so touching that it will make you wish Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen would return for Fuller House even more. Uncle Jesse shared a throwback behind the scenes video of the twins refusing to call him "John." The tiny twins represent Full House fans everywhere, because at this point, Stamos really should just change his name to Jesse.

Fuller House Season 3 premiered on Sept. 22, exactly 30 years after the Tanners first appeared on TV. The new season is just as full of callbacks to the original as the previous two, but Michelle continues to be noticeably absent. Unfortunately, that's unlikely to change anytime soon. Series creator Jeff Franklin explained to TVLine that he's given up asking the twins to return. He said,

"Personally, I've given up asking them. The door is open, but I'm not going to be calling them anymore to invite them. They just don't seem interested in coming. It's been three years of invitations, so they know the door is open. It's up to them to decide if they want to come play or not."

Despite the distinct lack of Michelle in Fuller House Season 3, Stamos is making sure the Olsens aren't left out of the anniversary celebration. He captioned the video, "#NetflixandHug Who's watching? #FullerHouse S3 #SayMyName."

As much as their presence on Fuller House is missed, the Olsens have a good reason for not returning to their acting roots. The twins have turned their childhood fame into a fashion empire, and their devotion to their business careers is evident. They were still in diapers when Full House started, so unlike the other actors, they didn't choose the Hollywood life — it was chosen for them. Now they've forged their own paths in a different industry, and returning to acting doesn't seem to be high on their list of priorities.

That doesn't make Michelle's absence from the reboot any less glaring. The youngest Tanner sister is greatly missed, and the reality that Fuller House may never be able to reunite Uncle Jesse and his munchkin is enough to make any fan sniffly. Michelle was a key part of Full House, and the special relationship she had with Jesse can never be replicated. Maybe that's why the show hasn't attempted to recast the iconic character — even though they were just 9 when Full House ended, Michelle will always be associated with the Olsens.

It's comforting to know that despite being turned down multiple times, Franklin is still leaving the door open for the Olsens to visit their childhood home. Who knows, maybe one day the twins will catch the nostalgia bug, and decide it's time to rejoin their castmates. If Stamos' post is any indication, the Fuller House cast will welcome the missing Tanner home with open arms.

Even if Michelle never appears on Fuller House, that won't take away from the sweet bond that she shared with Uncle Jesse. After all, Full House remains a rerun staple on cable, and all eight seasons of the show are coming to Hulu on Friday, Sept. 29. It's not quite the same as seeing what an adult Michelle would be like, but watching the classic episodes is one way to never lose touch with the character.

And as the Tanner family is so fond of saying, the door is always open for Michelle to return — if she ever does, you can bet Uncle Jesse will be there waiting with open arms to welcome his long-lost niece back into the fold.
