Is Carrie Fisher Doing OK?
In a bit of gut-wrenching breaking news, actor and author Carrie Fisher reportedly suffered a massive heart attack on a flight to Los Angeles on Friday afternoon, according to TMZ. You may be wondering, is Fisher doing OK? She was flying back from London when she allegedly experienced her medical emergency. She had been in London promoting her latest book, The Princess Diarist. Bustle has reached out to Fisher’s rep for comment, but has not heard back at the time of publication.
Update, 10:27 p.m. EST: Fisher is reportedly currently in intensive care and her condition remains "unknown," according to Entertainment Tonight. Despite earlier reports, her brother, Todd, told ET, "We certainly do not know her condition, that's why she is in ICU. I'm sure everyone wants to speculate, but now is not the time for that."
Update, 7:23 p.m. EST: The Associated Press reported that Fisher is now in stable condition, according to her brother Todd Fisher. He told AP that she is "out of emergency" and stabilized, but he could not disclose further information.
Earlier: The L.A. Times is currently reporting that Fisher is in "critical condition" after she was rushed from LAX to an undisclosed hospital. While there is no further concrete information on Fisher's condition at this time, it is fair to say that many of her fans are sincerely hoping that she has a safe and speedy recovery.
Fisher's popularity has grown considerably over the years, since she originated the role of Princess Leia in Star Wars IV: A New Hope in 1977. Fisher has gone on to become a noted author, activist, and Broadway star since then, and with each new role, her fandom has increased. Now, that large fandom is taking to social media to voice their concern and prayers Fisher heals quickly.
On Twitter, many fans and celebrities are asking to take a moment to send strength, like William Shatner, and others are hoping that Fisher will not be yet another celebrity to unexpectedly pass before the end of 2016.
Fisher is, without a doubt, a beloved living legend. There has been no shortage of sad celebrity news this year. I must admit, I am one of those fans hoping and praying that Fisher does indeed recover. Perhaps it's because we are in the midst of a happy holiday season, but this news is truly heartbreaking. I'm sending nothing but good wishes to Fisher and hope that she is on the mend before 2017 rolls around.
