Sad news broke on Saturday morning when TMZ reported that actor John Heard died at age 72. You'll likely instantly recognize Heard as the father, Peter McCallister, from the 1990 classic Home Alone. In the wake of this news, fans may be wondering how John Heard died. At this time, not many details are known, although TMZ reported that he was pronounced dead in his hotel room after police were called for a medical emergency. Per TMZ, the cause of death is currently unclear and a coroner is reportedly investigating. They also reported that Heard underwent "minor back surgery" earlier this week and was in the process of recovering. (Bustle reached out to Heard's manager, but did not receive an immediate response.)

While he may be best known for Home Alone, the Emmy nominated-actor made a name for himself beyond that beloved '90s movie and its sequel. Heard's career in Hollywood spanned decades, appearing in a range of roles including Big, Beaches, White Chicks, CSI: Miami, and of course, The Sopranos, which he earned his Emmy nom for Outstanding Guest Actor in '99. According to his IMDb page, Heard also had several projects currently in the post-production phase, including the movies Last Rampage and Living Among Us.

From the '70s all the way through this year, Heard took on a slew of TV and movie roles, showcasing his range of talent. The prolific actor will be missed.
