The Friendship Between These ‘This Is Us’ Stars Will Make You Tear Up
Jack and Randall Pearson's relationship on This Is Us is one to be admired, and the same goes with the actors who bring the characters to life. You may be wondering if Milo Ventimiglia and Sterling K. Brown are friends — and the answer is, very much so. The bond they share in real life will make your heart melt similar to how it does when watching each episode of the NBC drama.
One might say they have a friendship that resembles the closeness Jack and Randall once had. For example, Entertainment Weekly published an interview with Ventimiglia on Wednesday that shows just how much the former Gilmore Girls actor admires his TV son. Seeing as they are nominated in the same 2017 Emmy category (Lead Actor in a Drama Series), EW of course had to ask Ventimiglia if the following question: "Is Dad supposed to let his son win, or is it the other way around?"
Leave it to Ventimiglia to give such a Jack Pearson answer — and to make his fans swoon in the process. He responded:
"I’ll tell you what, I went on the Emmy website and I tried to vote for him, and I realized I couldn’t vote in my own category, and it kind of broke my heart. I was voting for Sterling. I was in my trailer, and I was like, ‘I’ve got some time. I’m going to vote.’ And I went on to vote and my category wasn’t there, and I was so pissed. I ended up walking over to his trailer and saying, ‘Hey man, I tried to vote for you, but it wouldn’t let me. So I’m just telling you that I wanted to vote for you.”
As for Brown, he responded to EW's question, as well, in August and joked, “Normally I would say Dad is supposed to let me win. But I’m actually older than Dad, so maybe I’m supposed to let him win? I’m not really quite sure."
Based on a video shared by The Hollywood Reporter on Wednesday, it's clear that Brown and Ventimiglia know each other quite well. The actors, alongside Chrissy Metz, Mandy Moore, and Justin Hartley, played a game to see how well they know each other. Well, they all definitely know each other pretty well. Ventimiglia knows how much Brown "loves tea." (Specifically, "peppermint tea with honey and lemon," as the American Crime Story actor revealed.)
After Hartley read the statement, "Favorite expression or word Milo uses all the time," Brown started clapping and laughing. Immediately, he knew the answer. "The man curses up a blue streak," Brown declared. Apparently, the actor loves "dropping f-bombs," as Hartley added.
Brown kindly explained that his TV dad doesn't use the f-word in a traditional sense. Instead of saying it when he's mad, he likes to say it when he's excited about something. "Never angry, it's like pure exuberance of f*ck" is how the Golden Globe winner described Ventimiglia's use of the word. As Brown noted, he will say something along the lines of, "Oh, f*ck yeah, man! It was so f*cking awesome!"
Obviously, actors will grow close on set, since they are constantly working together and filming scenes, but the way Brown and Ventimiglia interact seems to go beyond that. They truly care about each other and respect one another's talents. After the Emmy nominations were announced in July, Brown tweeted this:
First, this is the best congratulatory tweet ever. Second, this isn't the only time they've referred to each other as "dad" or "son". Another example of this is when Brown tweeted on Aug. 31, "Fun Fact: Today, 8/31/17, is Randall, Kate, & Kevin's Birthday! Can't wait to celebrate with you all in less than a month!" A fan responded, "Wait, isn't it Jack's, too?" To that, he answered, "Yes, Cori!!! It absolutely is!!!! Happy Birthday, Dad (aka Jack Pearson)!" Of course, Ventimiglia replied, "Thanks Son". These two are capable of making anyone tear up on and off screen.
It's good to know that they get along just as much as Jack and Randall did. They really are the best.
