This Tweet Inspired Hundreds Of Women To Ask Out Guys They Like, & You Need To See The Screenshots
Asking someone on a date is anxiety inducing. Remember that episode of Friends where Rachel asks Joshua out, and she ends up stammering and giving him Knicks tickets instead? We can all relate. One blogger suggested Twitter users shoot their shot and post a screenshot of the response, and it's actually the most inspiring thing I've ever seen. Traditional courtship norms, and societal expectations that gals should wait for guys to come to them, can make it difficult for women to ask a guy out in the first place.
But, this date challenge asked women to throw out the outdated rule book (because, it's 2017) and ask their crushes on a first date. The thread, started by London-based lifestyle blogger Simply Oloni, has gone viral, and the responses are super relatable and hilarious. Because who hasn't texted or messaged a crush and then promptly broke out in a cold sweat while waiting for the response?
On Oct. 26, Oloni tweeted: "Ladies ask that guy you fancy out on a date and tweet me a screen shot of his response." The tweet currently has 11,000 likes and more than 1,500 responses. The dating exercise prompted people to take a leap by letting the person they have a crush on know it, which is kind of like getting pushed off the high dive when you were a kid. Waiting for the response of said crush is akin to waiting to hit the water. Will it be a clean dive, or an epic belly flop that knocks the wind out of you? The only way to know for sure is to jump.
This date challenge Twitter thread feels like part online dating support group, and part game show. The stressful part when the contestants are in the lightning round and viewers at home are on the edge of their seats waiting to see what will happen. Who will win the big showcase showdown? Who will crack under pressure? Seriously, it's almost too much to take.
And, what happens if the object of your desire says yes? Now you might actually have to go on the date, and actually going on the date is almost as stressful as asking to go on the date. Why do we put ourselves through this torture?
Others couldn't take the pressure of waiting for a response.
Because, let's face it, like Tom Petty sang, the waiting is the hardest part.
And, some people, who joined the conversation because it's kind of like watching a car crash, started to feel anxious for those who were awaiting answers from their crushes.
But, some of the lucky users who were courageous enough to participate in the date challenge learned that the cliché "ask and you shall receive" is actually true.
Kudos to these date challenge contestants for getting right to the point.
Because, like that whole jumping off the high dive thing, standing on the edge and looking down just makes it worse.
However, some people clearly do not deserve to be asked out on dates.
Don't these fools with their heavy-handed let downs know how scary it is to put yourself out there? This pretty much sums up what the above response feels like.
It's always good to make sure the person you're asking isn't someone you've blown off in the past.
Oops.
And, this person's response is one way to make sure they never get a date with the person who asked — or their friend. Seriously.
Whatever happened to letting someone down easy?
I guess this is one way to say no. #ghosted
If asking is too scary, just send instructions instead.
It's always a good idea to make sure the object of your desire is not doing anything next weekend — like getting married.
But, if you ask now, you could be on a date with your crush in half an hour.
And some other guys just didn't really get it.
But somehow, it's not quite as bad as getting put in the friend zone.
Or when you don't know your audience.
While asking someone on a date can be scary AF, sometimes you learn they have been secretly carrying a torch for you all along ...
Just like in the movies.
Seriously, this one is giving me all the feels #datechallenge.
