Aaron Bencid On His Beginnings In Video Editing And Commercial Success
Crafting world-class film edits with passion and precision.
Aaron Bencid’s love for filmmaking began at a very young age. Growing up in Caracas, Venezuela, he often found himself in his uncle’s video store, where he would watch the films that came in almost weekly. His love and appreciation of the technical aspects of film eventually led him to create his short films, which later inspired him to pursue video editing as a career.
Inspirations and Early Career
Bencid’s first short films were created with friends on low-budget video cameras. These ventures eventually led him to access what he described as prosumer software, such as Final Cut Pro 7, After Effects, and Sony Vegas. During this time, he realized his passions lay in post-production rather than production itself.
After graduating from high school, Bencid pursued a filmmaking career and moved to Los Angeles, California, where he studied at the prestigious Art Center College of Design.
Upon graduating, he worked at Rosewood, which Bencid describes as a full-service creative agency. While working there, he was the lead editor and colorist on one of its major music teams, where he edited and colored content for numerous internationally acclaimed artists.
Significant Projects and Success
Some of Bencid’s most significant projects included his work on “We Are The Ones” for MBKA through the post-production house Wildchild. For the project, Bencid says he was flown from Los Angeles to New York “practically overnight.”
Bencid states that some of his biggest challenges, aside from quick turnarounds and demanding deadlines, came from working with different personalities and adapting to them while in live client sessions.
“Everything happened very quickly,” he says. “I landed in New York, and the next morning, they already had a post-production room ready for me to start editing.”
Bencid remained in New York for three weeks, when he was challenged to work across time zones with a director in China. However, even with these challenges in play and a schedule that involved working around the clock, he was given a film to edit for the project, including material from several influential figures.
In recent projects with Rosewood, Bencid also worked on the Lobos 1707 campaign, and Compton Cowboys for Gin and Juice, a celeb-baked pre-mixed alcoholic drink.
His work also led Bencid to participate in the post-production editing of music videos from a renowned Norwegian DJ, songwriter, and record producer who has collaborated with big-name artists.
Future Aspirations
Bencid believes his upbringing has shaped his capabilities as a filmmaker. Growing up in a country with many socio-political challenges instilled a relentless work ethic in him. This, combined with exposure to multiple landscapes, nature, and cultures, has brought what he describes as a “fresh perspective” into his work.
“Deep and meaningful art usually comes from complex periods of time that are rich in change,” Bencid says.
As for future aspirations, Bencid says that he wants to continue to work with elite post-house companies like the Harbor Picture Company, where he works now, and to continue to find visceral and exciting content to work on.
With a strong work ethic and a determination to succeed despite the challenges ahead of him, Aaron Bencid has worked from the ground up to build a promising career in filmmaking.
