The Staircase Fans Will Recognise This Elvis Star Instantly
Olivia DeJonge stars as Priscilla Presley in the new biopic.
Ahead of the much anticipated release of Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis biopic on June 24, one of the movie’s leading actors, Olivia DeJonge has been making headlines not only for her appearance as Priscilla Presley but also for her sartorial choices at the movie’s promo events.
During a special Elvis screening at BFI Southbank on May 31, the Australian actor wore a backless dress by Jonathan Simkhai, paired with Bulgari jewellery. And just before that, on May 25, DeJonge wore a floaty, turquoise Gucci dress to the Elvis screening at Cannes Film Festival, playing into a mid-century housewife aesthetic. But what else is there to know about DeJonge beyond her flawless wardrobe choices?
Well, DeJonge was born in Melbourne on April 30, 1998, and has Dutch and Irish ancestry. The 24-year-old star grew up in Perth’s Peppermint Grove and has a younger brother called James. She appeared in Netflix’s teen drama The Society. More recently, she appeared as Caitlin Atwater in HBO Max’s true crime drama The Staircase. Playing the daughter of Kathleen Peterson (the murdered woman at the centre of the story) put DeJonge in the heart of the action. DeJonge’s part in the Elvis biopic back, as Priscilla Presley, was announced in 2019.
As most people know by now, the role of the eponymous singer in Elvis is played by Austin Butler. And reports suggest that Butler and DeJonge were once linked as a couple in real life too. Butler and his now girlfriend Kaia Gerber made their red carpet debut at the 2022 Met Gala, but back in 2020, Butler and DeJonge were rumoured to be dating from January to November.
Just as Butler and his former partner Vanessa Hudgens announced their split (after nine years together), he was allegedly spotted “cuddling at a movie” with DeJonge, per Pop Sugar. They were seen together frequently throughout 2020 at dinners and on the beach. However, neither of them ever confirmed nor denied their suspected relationship.
It’s not clear if or who DeJonge is dating right now, but stepping into such an iconic role will likely mean she’s got quite the busy schedule. Her Instagram (@olivia_dejonge) of 371k followers features red carpet shots, magazine covers, and smiling snaps of friends.
Elvis will be released in UK cinemas on June 24, 2022.
