In We Live In Time, A24 Brings Back The Kind Of Epic On-Screen Romance We’ve Been Missing
Catch us, because we’re falling hard.
Fact: there’s no better feeling than being so engrossed in an on-screen relationship that you catch yourself cheering out loud when the two leads finally kiss. This kind of passionate storytelling has been missing from our cinematic experience for far too long — and we’re so, so happy to report that with A24’s We Live In Time, it’s finally back.
The film stars two of our major crushes — Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh (also both Academy Award nominees, NBD) — and marks the official return of the romance genre. It’s a decades-spanning, heart-swelling story of two people who fall in love, and all that comes after.
Here’s why we can’t wait to see it on the big screen.
The Leads
We already mentioned the A-list stars, but the names bear repeating. We’ve been into Andrew Garfield so long that it feels like reuniting with an old (yet still extremely hot) flame, and seeing him opposite our other fave, Florence Pugh, is almost too much to handle. They both bring serious acting chops to their roles as Tobias and Almut, and their combined talents make the movie into something truly special.
The Chemistry
A good romance movie needs a little heat — and these two never fail to turn up the temp. It’s not just present in the steamier scenes, either; the chemistry between Tobias and Almut is palpable while they tease each other on a walk down the street, or joke around with their young daughter. From the very first scene it’s clear that something’s crackling between them.
The Story
Directed by John Crowley, We Live In Time is anything but a simple tale of boy-meets-girl. Instead, the non-linear narrative takes us back and forth in the lives of Tobias and Almut, covering their unconventional meet-cute, their initial romance, the birth of their daughter, and the ups and downs that life throws their way.
It’s this deft use of unique storytelling that makes the movie stand out. Rather than slogging through the decades, we experience the years how they feel in real life — in pieces, simultaneously slow and all at once. It lets us really get to know and care about the characters as if they were people in our lives, which makes us all the more invested in their love story.
