She’s a mastermind, OK?

The Grammy Awards may be “music’s biggest night,” but there’s still room for private conversation — as long as you’re smart about it. Case in point? At the 2024 ceremony, Taylor Swift and Jack Antonoff chatted at their table, and Swift used a fashionable accessory to prevent fans from lip reading.

Early in the Feb. 4 broadcast, Swift and Antonoff were shown talking in the audience. A widely-circulated video of the exchange shows Swift holding a black fan to her cover lips, while leaning in to tell Antonoff something. Her longtime collaborator listens intently. “LMAO she’s so sneaky,” wrote one user on X (formerly Twitter), while another said they “need to know” what was said between the pair.

Not This Time!

This comes mere weeks after the Golden Globes, where Swift was seen gossiping with Selena Gomez, and fans attempted to lip read to decode their conversation.

There was even speculation that the friends were talking about Timothée Chalamet and Kylie Jenner, which Gomez ultimately shut down. “Noooooo I told Taylor about two of my friends who hooked up,” she later commented on Instagram. “Not that that’s anyone business.”

This time, it seems Swift came prepared for potential gossip. Swift’s pal Lana Del Rey was even seen with a matching fan — because, why wouldn’t you want the entire friend group to stay safe from online rumor-mongering?

At Tea Time, Everybody Agrees...

While Swift was wise to fan up, the stunt inspired some rumors itself. Several viewers speculated whether the fans were a nod to Swift’s “Look What You Made Me Do” music video and, in turn, to the highly anticipated Reputation (Taylor’s Version).

But alas, Swift might have been whispering about something even bigger. Later in the show, while accepting her 13th-ever Grammy award for Best Pop Vocal Album for Midnights, Swift announced the forthcoming release of her 11th studio album, The Tortured Poets Department.

So, who knows? Maybe she had some last-minute details to hammer out with her go-to producer. In a pre-show ceremony, Antonoff praised Swift in his acceptance speech for Producer of the Year, Non-Classical. Of their collaboration on “Out of the Woods” a decade ago, he said, “Taylor Swift kicked that f*cking door open for me.”
