Billie Eilish is trying to put recent events into context on her new song. On June 7, Eilish debuted a newly written song, “TV,” at her show in Manchester, England, as part of her ongoing Happier Than Ever World Tour. “We haven’t played a new song live before it’s out since 2017 or 2018,” she told the crowd to introduce the track. “This is one we just wrote, and we just wanted to play for you.”

Eilish performed the song acoustically, with only her brother Finneas backing her on guitar and lending background vocals. On “TV,” the singer seemed to address her recent split from Matthew Tyler Vorce, singing about being in denial and mourning broken plans. “All of my friends are missing again,” she sings. “That’s what happens when you fall in love.”

In the second verse, Eilish seems to reference how social media became consumed with Johnny Depp and Amber Heard’s controversial defamation trial as more pressing issues were happening in the U.S., like the Supreme Court’s potential overturn of Roe v. Wade, which would severely limit abortion access across the country. “The internet’s gone wild watching movie stars on trial,” she sings. “While they’re overturning Roe v. Wade.”

In 2018, Depp sued his ex-wife Heard for $50 million in a defamation lawsuit after she wrote a Washington Post op-ed proclaiming to be “a public figure representing domestic abuse,” despite not naming Depp in her essay. In response, Heard filed a countersuit for $100 million, claiming that Depp’s legal team “orchestrated a false and defamatory smear campaign” against her. On June 1, following an intense six-week trial, Depp won $15 million in damages for his libel lawsuit, while Heard received $2 million in damages in her countersuit against her ex-husband’s former lawyer.
