'They Came Together' Skewers Bad RomComs

What do you get when you throw Amy Poehler, Paul Rudd, Cobie Smulders, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Michael Shannon, Christopher Meloni, Adam Scott, Ellie Kemper, Melanie Lynskey, John Stamos, Bill Hader, Max Greenfield, Ed Helms, Jack McBrayer, Kenan Thompson, Ken Marino, Teyonah Parris, Michaela Watkins, and Michael Ian Black into a Wet Hot American Summer -helmed blender? COMEDY freaking MAGIC, my friends. At least that's what looks to be evident from the trailer for the David Wain-directed They Came Together. Not even our beloved Nora Ephron is safe. (But that's okay!)

Let it be said: romantic comedies, when done well, are a true delight. But... barring few exceptions they haven't been for a very long time. Formulaic and cheesy, the genre has really not grown up, favoring ridiculous tropes and reductive stereotypes to character development and interesting storytelling. So, really, who better to highlight those absurdities than the folks behind everyone's favorite camp movie? Rumor has it there's also a Judge Judy cameo — confirming that absurdity is the name of the game on this one.

Fiction books, leaf fights, spinning on the shiny streets of New York City — this film has everything you love to hate (or hate to love) about the RomCom game all rolled into one ridiculous package. Now get excited for this movie or we'll have to insist you go jump in a lake, meathead. They Came Together heads to the picture houses on June 27, 2014.
