I Tried The Esthetician-Loved Skin Care Wands That Have The Internet Abuzz — Here Are My Honest Thoughts
Thanks to social media, there’s no shortage of viral beauty products to try. But as you may have already found out, what’s good for the girls on TikTok isn’t necessarily good for you (or good at all, TBH). Then, there are those rare gems that become an instant hit online and among the pros because they use science-backed ingredients and boast results confirmed by clinical studies. Shaklee has introduced two new products — the Youth Ageless Sculpting Wand For Face & Neck and the Youth Ageless Sculpting Wand For Eyes — that perfectly marry both the popularity and proven results components. The peptide-packed serums also take things a step further with a unique applicator that uses a stainless steel rollerball to help disperse the product and create a cooling effect to help take down inflammation and swelling.
With all of those factors working in Shaklee’s favor, we were anxious to give the wands a go, which can be purchased individually or as a set (the set will save you about $7, in case you were wondering). Here’s what happened when I put the Shaklee Youth Ageless Sculpting Wands to the test.
Fast Facts:
- Key benefits: Hydrates, firms, and brightens skin on the face and neck
- Key ingredients: Power8 Peptide Blend, Youth Complex, Vital Repair+® Complex, niacinamide, hyaluronic acid, snow mushroom
- Cruelty-free
- Vegan
Before I get to my personal experience with the wand, it’s important to understand the ingredients that power the serum and helped make it a sold-out product in the first place. The patent-pending formula counts Shaklee’s Power8 Peptide Blend as its star ingredient, which comprises eight different peptides that trigger collagen and elastin production to give skin a smoother, firmer appearance. Those peptides make up 25% of the serum, but the formula also includes several other complexes that support collagen production, as well as hydrating and brightening ingredients like hyaluronic acid, snow mushroom, and niacinamide. One of the board-certified dermatologists who tested out the wand, Dr. Laura Scott, M.D., calls this a “now and then formula,” meaning that the ingredients in the serum deliver noticeable results to your skin right away and over time as you continue to use it.
If you’re wondering what those immediate results are (I was, too), the brand reports that the serum was shown to visibly relax the appearance of expression lines within 15 minutes after application, according to a clinical study. Full disclosure, the only time I notice any expression lines on my face is when I’m actually making a facial expression, so I may not have been the best candidate to test that particular claim. Even so, I did notice an immediate boost in hydration after applying the serum over my face in the morning, which made my skin look noticeably smoother and more refreshed. The serum felt super-lightweight and absorbed quickly without leaving behind any residue, and it also didn’t have a heavy fragrance (or any detectable fragrance at all for that matter). Since I was just working from my apartment, I skipped the rest of my morning skin care and makeup routine to really see how the product worked, and I was pleasantly surprised that my skin looked just as moisturized several hours later as it did when I first applied it.
Fast Facts:
- Key benefits: Hydrates, firms, brightens, and de-puffs the eye area
- Key ingredients: Power8 Peptide Blend, Youth Complex, Vital Repair+® Complex, niacinamide, hyaluronic acid, vitamin C derivative, glycolic acid, caffeine
- Cruelty-free
- Vegan
With my face and neck serum on, I reached for the Youth Ageless Smoothing Wand For Eyes next. The brand let me know that esthetician Georgia Louise likes to store the wands in the refrigerator to double up on the cooling benefits. Given that she created her own ice globes long before face icing became a thing, and she has a dedicated celebrity following that includes everyone from supermodel Linda Evangelista to actresses like Jennifer Aniston and Emily Blunt, I was quick to copy.
Keeping the wands in the fridge made applying the serums feel more luxurious, but it was especially a game-changer with the eye serum wand, as I noticed that the puffiness around my eyes that I typically wake up with was completely gone after about a minute of moving the rollerball in an outward direction around my eyes. I also noticed that the occasional fine lines I get under my eyes (usually when I’m especially tired or the weather changes) were gone. I suspect this has something to do with my skin needing more hydration, which the Shaklee serum more than delivers between its Vital Repair+® Complex, which contains panthenol, grape seed extract, hyaluronic acid, and glycerin. The eye serum also tackles signs of fatigue and puffiness with niacinamide, caffeine, and a vitamin C derivative.
There was only one thing that I was not a fan of with this serum, and that was the scent. While I couldn’t find any fragrance or perfume listed in the ingredients, the serum did have what I can only describe as a chemical smell to it that I found off-putting. All of the brand’s products are free from questionable ingredients like parabens and phthalates, and the eye serum’s ingredients list seemed nearly identical to the face and neck serum, so I’m not totally sure what was going on. It wasn’t so unpleasant that I would stop using the serum and I didn’t experience any irritation, but just a heads up for anyone planning to try it out.
