Producer Jerry Weintraub Dies At 77
The world lost a phenomenal talent today, as it was reported on Monday, July 6, that acclaimed producer, Jerry Weintraub, died at the age of 77. According to Variety, the Ocean's Eleven producer passed away in Palm Springs, California, and "had been in poor health recently." Weintraub's production career spanned over four decades, with his first credited role as producer being for the 1974 documentary, Frank Sinatra: The Main Event. Throughout his illustrious career, Weintraub acted as producer for a plethora of beloved films, such as the Karate Kid franchise, Diner, and HBO's Behind The Candelabra, for which he garnered an Emmy. Most recently, Weintraub acted as Executive Producer for HBO's The Brink, a darkly satirical look at conflicts spurred from World War III. The comedy premiered on June 21.
In March 2007, Weintraub published a poignant essay for Vanity Fair, where he spoke of his love for the industry. "I love my work, so it actually feels more like fun. I am lucky enough to speak with some of the most interesting and creative people in the world. These conversations are what keep me going through the day; they engage and excite me."
One of those "interesting and creative people" who worked with Weintraub was A-list actor, George Clooney. In a touching statement released to TheWrap, Clooney shared his condolences over the loss of his friend and former producer:
"In the coming days there will be tributes, about our friend Jerry Weintraub. We’ll laugh at his great stories, and applaud his accomplishments. And in the years to come the stories and accomplishments will get better with age, just as Jerry would have wanted it. But not today. Today our friend died. To his family and friends, Amal and I send our love. And to those who didn’t know him we send our deepest sympathy. You would have loved him."
Weintraub will be sorely missed, but his legacy will continue to live on in the timeless films he produced. To celebrate the life and achievements of this inimitable talent, below are a selection of Weintraub's most memorable works.
