Everything We Know About Britney's New Album

by Alex Kritselis

At the end of May, rumors began circulating online that Britney Spears' new album had been cancelled due to the underwhelming commercial performance of her much-hyped Iggy Azalea collaboration, "Pretty Girls." (The single only managed to reach No. 29 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Womp, womp.) Fortunately for the pop music icon's legion of dedicated fans, those rumblings seem to have been proven false, as Spears just recently returned to the recording studio to work on new tunes. Brace yourselves: Spears is preparing to take over the radio waves once again! With any luck, the upcoming project will mark a "return to form" for the 33-year-old diva.

Shortly before it premiered in Dec. 2013, Spears dubbed her last album, Britney Jean, her "most personal record yet." It sounded promising, but sadly, the collection didn't end up resonating with listeners: Britney Jean sold less than 107,000 copies in its first week — the lowest opening sales total of Spears' entire career. The set also failed to produce a top 10 hit and wasn't particularly well-received by critics. Ouch. That being said, if anyone can turn things around, it's Spears. She's a living legend!

Here's everything we know about Britney Spears' new album so far:

She's Recording "Slowly But Surely"

"I'm gonna do [a new album] slowly but surely," Spears told Billboard in March. "There's a lot going on with my kids and schools and, you know, adding new sports and stuff like that. I'm gonna try to do my best to do an amazing album, but it's not my full priority right now."

Clearly, Spears has a lot on her plate at the moment — but I'm still hoping she'll drop her new album before the year is out. Fingers crossed!

She's Been Back In The Studio For A While

As far as I can tell, Spears has been back in the studio since Sept. 2014. So, in other words, it's possible she's been laying down new songs for a while now.

She's Working With New Songwriters & Producers

According to Billboard, Spears recently hit the studio with in-demand hip-hop producer DJ Mustard (Jeremih's "Don't Tell 'Em"). Mustard reportedly described the pair's collaboration as "harder than hard." Intriguing...

According to Idolator, Spears also spent some studio time recently with the impressive musical trio of Ian Kirkpatrick, Simon Wilcox, and Chantal Kreviazuk. Kirkpatrick produced Jason Derulo's latest smash, "Want to Want Me"; Wilcox worked on Nick Jonas' breakthrough solo single, "Jealous"; and Kreviazuk helped create Kelly Clarkson's "Walk Away." Wow. Hopefully, the three talented musicians came up with something extra special for Spears. (She's pop royalty, after all.)

(Note: While we don't know for sure that the two aforementioned studio sessions were for Spears' new album, it seems likely.)

Stay tuned.
