13 Things To Know About Dating A Sagittarius
“What sign are you?” someone asks us, as though the world’s decisions—and their determining factor to be friends with or date us—rests on the answer to this one question. Or, we start to analyze people based on their astrology sign's characteristics—I forget, is “x” sign stable or more spur-of-the-moment? Wait, which signs are compatible? And, did I date one before? How did that go?! Then we remind ourselves that it’s silly (right?!) to base our future with someone (that we just met!) based on our astrology signs matching up. But, then one’s sign is advertised on dating sites while we scroll through their profiles, more reminders of “What’s your sign?” Though I do think there is something in the stars—literally and metaphorically—I don’t base my dating choices on astrology (completely).
With lots of dating experience over the years, I do know that my Sagittarius self, The Archer, a fire sign, gets along extremely well with other fire signs, Aries and Leos (though sometimes the fire is too hot, so to speak, with other Sagittarians, making for ill-suited friendships and romantic relationships). Though I find myself friends with many fellow fire signs, in looking back at my boyfriends’ signs, I rarely tended to date them. Instead, I have mostly dated other signs, who are true to their astrological characteristics (for better or worse). For instance, I found Tauruses to be stubborn, yet dependable, Pisces mates were intuitive, yet pessimistic, and Scorpios were focused, yet jealous.
Many famous people share our Sag sign, like Steven Spielberg, Taylor Swift, Bobby Flay, and Walt Disney—the whole gamut! Here are some key things to know when dating a Sagittarius. (Note: Not all of these apply to *every* Sagittarius, but to many I know and have read about.)
1. We Are Spontaneous
When we want to go on a road trip with five-minutes’ notice, guess what? We usually will. Are you ready? (If the thought of doing something unplanned makes you nervous, you may want to stay away from us freewheeling Sags.)
2. We Are Social
You know that person at parties who starts conversations with strangers? Yep, that’s us. We can talk to anyone, anywhere. So if you’re an introvert or don’t like approaching people you don’t know, no problem! We’ll do it for you!
3. We Are Creative
Need a present for someone? Ask us and we’ll come up with a clever, one-of-a-kind gift! We’ll also come up with fun dates. Anyone can go to a movie, but how about a hike through an old, hidden cave near the Pacific Ocean that no one knows about?
4. We Are Friendly
This is related to #2 and #3 above, but we can charm the pants off anyone. (Case in point: Once at the DMV, I had a worker who was NOT nice. Instead of stooping to her unfriendly level, I started to talk to her about her day (trying to get to the root of her not-nice-ness) and, guess what? She opened up and was SO NICE, so much so that I later brought her a thank-you note for her help—and she started to cry! Don’t force the charm. Sags just are.)
5. We Are Flirtatious
We don’t mean to be. We’re just trying to be friendly, but, oftentimes, people think we’re being flirty. Just know we love (or like) you and only you... once we settle down, that is (see #10).
6. We Are Optimistic
Yes, we are glass-half-full—or overflowing—people. Have a problem? Seek out a Sag to make you feel better and remind you about all the good in your life, and that this issue is just temporary. (Believe me, I know what it’s like to be depressed and sad. In 2009, I lost my job, couldn’t pay my rent, so gave up my apartment and couch-surfed until I could get financially stable again. Those ended up being the best four years of my life! So, turn negatives into positives! Or find a Sag to do it for you!)
7. We Are Dreamers
We have many, many dreams. But—we know, since we are so optimistic—that they can come true!
8. We (Also) Have Short Attention Spans
But, again with our optimism and loyalty (#6 and #10), once we decide on the things, or people, we want to pursue (career-wise, love-wise, etc.), we become dedicated to those.
9. We Love Our Freedom
Like the Kenny Chesney song, Wild Child, we are a free spirit and prefer an exploring mentality versus a being-tied-down one. This doesn’t mean we cannot commit, though…
10. We Are Loyal
Despite all the above, we will be the best partner ever and be as loyal and committed as ever—to work, life, you (once you’ve tied us down, that is… and if you have, congratulations!).
11. We Are Inquisitive
We will ask what others won’t, or don’t, think of asking. The world is our oyster (and yours, too!)... you just have to be open to it (or at least don't mind if we are!). Also, if we ask you a lot of questions, don't think we're a private eye! We're just curious and want to know everything about you!
12. We Are Passionate
Use your imagination. ;) We are also passionate about all of the above, our hopes, our dreams, our spontaneity, our freedom, you…
13. We Are Brutally Honest
Do you have a thick skin? Great! You’ll need it! We don’t mean to be so honest, but sometimes things just slip out and then we can’t take them back. But it’s better than bottling our feelings in, right? At least you’ll have no guessing games about how we feel! (So if you don't want our true opinion on that shirt, don't ask!)
