Does Your Hair Need Sunscreen?
You (hopefully) slather sunscreen on your body before stepping out into that summer sunshine, but does your hair need sunscreen love, too? Real Simple asked several dermatologists and found while your hair doesn't need sunscreen the way your face does, other forms of protection are worth looking into. You may not get "hair burn" after a long day at the beach, but those UV rays still affect your lovely locks!
Before we even talk about hair, it's important to remember hair grows out of your scalp, which can most definitely burn like WHOA. Heidi Waldorf, director of laser and cosmetics dermatology at the Mount Sinai Center in New York, recommends wearing hats to protect your scalp or, at the very least, applying sunscreen down your part and on your ears.
As for hair itself, though it doesn't burn like skin, there are still reasons to seek protection from UV rays. Edward Tricomi, Master Stylist at Warren-Tricomi Salons, pointed out how the rays can lighten natural hair, promote fading in color treated locks, and, processed or not, "too much sunlight will dry out hair and make it brittle."
If you want to avoid brittle hair and add tons of shine to your 'do, these 5 styling products with UV filters will keep your hair lusciously smooth and protected all summer long.
