According to a new study by Expedia and Tinder, who joined up to get to the bottom of how singles think about things, there are romantic cities to get engaged in and ones you should definitely avoid. Hear that, people who are about to propose? If you’re planning to drop the big question during a Cleveland Indians game, then you may want to reassess after reading this, because Cleveland is not on the list. Sorry! Actually, I can’t imagine baseball games, in general, are on the list, but I digress.
The study extended to include other exciting facts, too, like questions about traveling with a partner (or not), and where people are likely to honeymoon. As the study found, 25 percent of Americans are down with honeymooning at a theme park (Why? Who are you people?), 18 percent were interested in getting engaged at a theme park (Why? Screaming kids sounds romantic to you?), and only seven percent thought getting married at one sounded stellar. Having already voiced my opinion on theme parks, I don’t need to judge that crew, too.
But back to proposals, here are the top five places where your lady (or gentleman) love, really wants you to pop the big question.
5. Sydney
Although it sounds fairly random, according to participants in the study, 20 percent of them to be exact, Sydney, Australia makes for one hell of a proposal spot. Honestly, when I think about proposal places, I do not think about Australia, in any capacity, but maybe that’s because I’ve seen A Cry in the Dark too many times. As always, Meryl Streep killed it, and there are lots of dingoes being naughty in it. Netflix it.
4. New York City
Ah, home sweet home. As a New Yorker, I can totally see why someone would want to be proposed to here, but if you don’t live here and don’t love it the way us New Yorkers do, it seems like a bizarre choice. However, my commentary aside, 21 percent felt that NYC is THE place to get a diamond slipped on their finger while screaming, “Yes!”
3. Barcelona
Barcelona is an amazing city. It’s cool, laid back, and as someone who’s here for the month, I can say there’s no other place in the world quite like it. But, because life is full of “buts,” it does not fall, at least in my mind, into the romantic category, so this choice confuses me. It totally falls into the let’s-get-stoned-then-drink-on-the-beach-all-day category, but I thought that was only romantic in my mind. Glad to know I'm not alone on that.
2. Rome
Coming in at 40 percent, and in second place, is Rome. We already talked about how good looking the people are there, so it makes sense that, especially if you managed to get a hot Italian into your clutches, that you’d want to be proposed to there too… while eating pizza, of course.
1. Paris
Well, well, well... Paris is number one for proposal cities? SHOCKING. Regarded as the most romantic city in the world (cheese will make anyone feel that way), according to 46 percent of participants, this is the best place in the world to get engaged. I was proposed to in Paris, but being a curmudgeon New Yorker, my immediate thought was, “Wouldn’t this be so much better in New York?” Yes, romance is totally wasted on me. But I also wasn't eating cheese at the time, so that may have been the problem.
