As soon as we saw Emma become the new Dark One on Once Upon a Time 's Season 4 finale, we knew Storybrooke would be in for a major shake up the likes of which we've never seen before. I mean, what happens when the source of all good consumes the source of all evil? Which one has the better odds of triumphing over the other? Of course, we'll have to wait until next fall to get most of those questions answered, but in the meantime, I can't help but worry what OUAT Season 5 will mean for Hook and Emma's relationship. Could the Dark One transformation actually cause Captain Swan to break up? The thought is almost too unbearable to comprehend, and yet (as much as I hate to admit it) the possibility seems almost inevitable, especially given the Dark One's past relationship history.
Granted, we only have Rumple to go on here since we haven't really gotten to know the previous Dark Ones nearly as well (or at all for that matter). But based on Rumple and Belle's failed marriage, the odds certainly don't look to be in Hook and Emma's favor, at least while she's linked to that dagger. Rumple repeatedly tried to fight against his dark nature only to inevitably fall under its spell time and time again. His love for Belle might have slowed the process down, but at the end of the day, it wasn't enough to defeat the evil within him. Emma could very well end up struggling in the exact same way.
Now, granted, just like in real life, every couple is different as is each individual character. Maybe Rumple always had villainous tendencies, which the dagger heightened to a much greater level. Emma, on the other hand, has always been a source of light and good — even more-so than the average person, considering Snow and Charming basically performed an evil exorcism on her before she was even born. So perhaps the Savior will be able to fight against the darkness in ways her straw-spinning predecessor couldn't. But even so, that still doesn't mean Emma and Hook won't face their fair share of struggles because of it.
First of all, the two of them are way too happy and adorable these days for something to not go wrong. This drama loves to toy with our emotions, especially in regards to romantic entanglements, which means these lovebirds were bound to have a few obstacles thrown their way, regardless of whether Emma became the new Dark One or not. That's just how these things work, dearies. Second of all, we've been told time and time again that all magic comes with a price. So given the amount of magic Emma just consumed, I'm guessing she's going to have to pay the piper in some very big way, and I fear it will be in the form of her relationship with a certain dreamy, eyeliner-prone pirate.
Not to mention the fact that Emma might just be way too busy with tracking down Merlin to focus on her current romantic status. Or, even worse, her darkish nature sends Hook spiraling back to villain territory. (He did start off as being a bad guy, remember?) I just hope that when this whole Dark One situation sorts itself out (which hopefully it will), Emma won't have lost everything that she cared about in the process. Though, I guess, Hook becoming single wouldn't necessarily be the end of the world. (Call me?) Just kidding, of course. #CaptainSwan4Eves
