British Fashion Award Nominees and Why We Love Them, Part 1
Tomorrow at midnight, voting closes for the British Fashion Awards, which honor "an individual who most embodies the spirit of British fashion and is an international ambassador for London as a leading creative fashion capital." Britain has an incredibly stylish past, characterized by, oh, the Beatles in their skinny suits, Vivienne Westwood and her safety pins, and a little thing called the invention of the miniskirt.
Even if you're not a Brit yourself, you can still vote! And vote you should, or at least gaze adoringly over the deserving nominees, stopping occasionally to shake your fists at the heavens, because Alexa Chung didn't make it onto the list.
Anna Wintour
Who? Vogue's chief madam.
Style: Aside from that iconic bob and her front-row oversized sunglasses, Wintour likes statement chain necklaces, florals, dramatic furs, and a good mid-length shift dress.
Vote Wintour because: ...dude. Dude! She runs Vogue!
Ben Whishaw
Who? The dreamy actor best known for his onstage portrayal of Hamlet. He's also appeared in films such as Cloud Atlas, Skyfall, and Bright Star.
Style: Unruly poet-hair, a sprinkling of facial scruff. He modeled for Prada Eyewear and looks fantastic in a suit.
Vote Whishaw because: ...he appears to abide by the hard and fast rule that shaggy facial hair must be paired with exquisite tailoring.
Cara Delevingne
Who? The 21-year-old It model with those brows.
Style: All the major designers love Cara, as we witnessed during fashion month. Her off-duty model style is grungy and cool, characterized by sassy beanies, leather pants, sneakers, jackets, and weird faces.
Vote Delevingne because: ...attitude is more important than brand names.
Carey Mulligan
Who? The ethereal actress with the slightly mournful eyes who just played Daisy Buchanan in The Great Gatsby.
Style: A little classic, a little girly, and always reflective of the nymph-like element that she brings to the big screen.
Vote Mulligan because: ...you appreciate the demure, the ladylike, and the pastel.
David Beckham
Who? A gorgeous, gorgeous man. Plays soccer and poses in his underwear.
Style: Did you catch that whole "poses in his underwear" part? When he's not doing that, he's rocking facial stubble, a Macklemore haircut (or is Macklemore rocking a Beckham haircut?), tattoo sleeves, fitted t-shirts, velvet blazers, or tailored suits.
Vote Beckham because: ...you appreciate a man who can keep up with his stylish wife.
David Gandy
Who? The male model in the Dolce & Gabbana "Light Blue" ads.
Style: Aside from being incredibly buff, he's also known for deep v-necks, jackets with popped collars, suits with vests, and constantly lifting up a tight white t-shirt to reveal his abs.
Vote Gandy because: ...you think underwear is just as fashionable as a three-piece suit.
Dermot O'Leary
Who? Presenter for The X Factor.
Style: Tight trousers, skinny ties, and neat lapels.
Vote O'Leary because: ...you believe in the Mod-inspired suit.
Florence Welch
Who? The major lungs behind Florence + The Machine.
Stye: Aside from that flame-red hair, Welch is known for her impressive way with vintage and her Stevie Nicks-esque stage style, which she once described as "The Lady of Shalott meets Ophelia...mixed with scary gothic bat lady."
Vote Welch because: ...you know a witchy woman is only as powerful as her vintage collection.
Harry Styles
Who? Member of your favorite band, One Direction.
Style: Swooshy hair, bro jewelry, popped collars for days, and the ability to work a statement scarf.
Vote Styles because: ...where would society be without our boy bands?
