Let me just start off by making it very clear that I do not actually find cannibalism funny in any way, shape, or form. Never in my life do I ever want to eat someone or, at the same time, be eaten by anyone else. (Call me prudish, but the whole thing seems just downright unpleasant.) Which is one of the many, many reasons Dr. Hannibal Lecter is considered to be one of the most formidable villains of all time. This guy doesn't just murder his victims. He eats them. If that's not enough to send chills up your spine, then I don't know what is. However, that's not to say that NBC's TV adaptation of Hannibal hasn't found a way to our funny bone every now and again. That's right, folks, you heard me correctly: Hannibal can actually be downright funny.
Of course, what I'm referring to is a very dark sense of humor, mind you. But that's to be expected, especially considering that the main underlying punchline in all of this is, you know, humans consuming other humans. Not exactly the foundation for much knee-slapper material. And yet, Hannibal continuously finds ways to surprise us, and that includes its occasional comical undertones. So just to give you an idea of what exactly it is that I'm talking about, here's a small taste, if you will, of all the times Hannibal was just as hilarious as it is horrifying.
When Hannibal's Words Of Comfort Were Anything But Reassuring
The only thing stronger than Hannibal's lust for killing, is his appetite for a good and hearty meal. (Heart being the key term here.) It's a dark joke, sure. But one that's executed to perfection.
When Praise Became A Cooking Preference Pun
I'm more of a "medium well" girl myself, but to each their own.
When Will Channeled His Inner Hulk
Looks like someone's been binge-watching superhero movies on Netflix.
When Subtle Word-Play Made All The Difference
It's only a few choice words and yet they still say so much.
When Hannibal Got Called Out For Being Creepy
And thus the world's weirdest bromance was born.
When Hannibal Spoke This Very Real Truth
If only his dinner guests understood the full extent of what that actually meant.
So bring it on, Season 3! We're ready to savor a third course of laughs (and nightmares).
