You know what I love most about social media and the whole "circulation of information" thing? Not the re-defining of breaking news, and not the rise of hashtag activism (although, OK, fine those are "pretty awesome" or whatever). What I am most appreciative of is increased knowledge of free food events — like, for example, Dunkin' Donuts' free donut giveaway on June 5th in honor of National Donut Day. Thanks to the wonders of the Internet, I now know that anyone who buys a beverage this Friday at Dunkin' Donuts is entitled to one free donut of their choice. What a time we live in!
National Donut Day is, in fact, a real holiday, established by the Chicago Salvation Army in 1938 to celebrate the volunteers who handed out donuts to soldiers during World War I. As Jeff Miller, Dunkin' Donut's Executive Chef and Vice President of Product Innovation, so aptly said in a press release, “Donuts have a special place in our country’s history and culture, creating moments of delight, lifting spirits and bringing people together at work and at home." Excuse me for a second; it's raining on my face.
As if the offer of a free donut for the entire U.S. weren't enough, Dunkin' Donuts has announced that they will extend the offer to all of their international chains as well. Happy holidays, Bulgaria, Colombia, Germany, Indonesia, and everywhere else in the world that has at least one Dunkin' Donuts location within its borders.
And for the cherry on top, there's also this: Krispy Kreme has announced that they will also be participating in this historic and patriotic day (except, inexplicably, for the state of Connecticut — sorry, dudes). So on June 5th, go forth, young patriots, and get your free donuts. Yes, Dunkin' Croissants Donuts (aka the chain's take on Dominique Ansel's infamous cronut) and Cheesecake Squares are excluded from the offer, but they're not really donuts, so who cares. And yes, you do have to purchase a beverage in order to snag your free pastry — but DD coffee is great and donuts make everyone thirsty, so I don't really see the problem with that, either. So, yes. The answer is yes. Yes please to free donuts.
