Imagine If 'Friends' Traveled To More Locations

by Mallory Carra

Like most who owned a TV in the '90s, I absolutely adored the NBC sitcom Friends. I've seen every episode more than once and I still quote Joey, Rachel, Chandler, Monica, Ross, and Phoebe, like, daily. But, I'd have to say that my all-time favorite episodes involved the gang traveling together to new surroundings, and it got me wondering what it would've been like if Friends had gone on more vacations. During its 10-year run, the series "traveled" to Barbados, Las Vegas, Montauk, and London (the cast really did film those episodes in London, too). All of those episodes are so fun, so why not imagine more? The world is very big.

Whenever the gang travels, it's always quite an adventure, and there's always some mischief. Like when they went to Vegas, Rachel and Ross end up married (and later, divorced). In Montauk, Rachel writes Ross a long letter that makes him fall asleep, and Joey gets buried in the sand — which is in the shape of a mermaid's body (and of course he doesn't mind). In Barbados, Monica's hair frizzes to an extreme, while Joey and Rachel try to figure out what their romantic chemistry means. And of course, we all know what happened in London — Chandler and Monica hook up.

Here are some other places I think Friends should have visited and some crazy things the gang would've been up to in those locations.

Iceland

Iceland is a very beautiful country with gorgeous, other-wordly landscapes. If Friends were to visit the small island, I'd imagine the gang would have a lot of fun. Monica would obsess over trying all of the country's delicacies, like fermented shark, whale meat, and puffin. Ross would get lost while taking the bus to the Viking museum (yup, it exists). The nightlife in Reykjavik is pretty fierce — bars are open all day and the capitol city's citizens usually party it up from 2 a.m. to 5 a.m. — and it totally would wear Joey out. Rachel and Chandler would find themselves struggling to find the perfect place to see Aurora Borealis.

Tokyo

I think this Japanese city would be the perfect place for another one of Ross' paleontology conferences, to which the rest of the friends should definitely tag along. Ross would probably misunderstand a Japanese pleasantry, while Joey would fall for a Harajuku girl. Rachel might have fun collecting Hello Kitty merchandise. Phoebe somehow would know fluent Japanese.

Hawaii

I always thought Friends would visit here, but let's say the gang were to hop a flight to the islands and hilarity ensued. Ross would obsess over volcanoes and volcanic activity. Rachel, Monica, and Phoebe would take a hula class, but only Phoebe is good at it. Joey would stuff himself with pineapple at the Dole Plantation.

Italy

Suddenly, Joey has this desire to get in touch with his family in the big ol' boot, so Friends heads to Italia. Joey would set out on a search for his great grandfather who turns out to be pretty rich, but misunderstanding some Italian would put him searching in the wrong direction. Monica would probably come across some kids playing soccer in the street and become super competitive with them. Rachel would max out her credit card while shopping, not realizing the Euro to dollar exchange rate is not in her favor.

Minsk

Confession: I always wanted David the Scientist Guy and Phoebe to end up together. Sure, Mike is cool, too, but I love the Season 1 episode where David and Phoebe meet, fall in love, and then he must leave for Minsk. So what if some time after Season 1 (and before Phoebe met Mike), the gang went to Minsk? Phoebe and David would reunite, and Ross would explore David's lab.

Miami

If the gang ventured to Miami, Monica would definitely have frizzy hair again. Ross would be obsessed with taking a tour of the Everglades and would get into a compromising position with a crocodile. Plus, Joey would party in South Beach, and Chandler would accidentally wander onto a nude beach.

But, one thing is for sure, no matter where the Friends go, hilarity would surely follow.
