Ryn Weaver's Message About Feminism Is Spot-On

by Alex Kritselis

Pop music needs more outspoken supporters of gender equality: Recently, up-and-coming singer-songwriter Ryn Weaver was asked what she'd say to people who don't like her "strong feminist personality," and her response is spot-on and hilarious. I feel like pop stars are often reluctant to discuss social topics (like feminism, racism, transphobia, etc.) because they're afraid of "saying the wrong thing." Thankfully, however, Weaver has no problem speaking her mind:

I would tell them to fuck off 'cause I don't think that's their business. I think having a strong personality as a female is a beautiful thing. What? Do you want me to sit back and make you fucking cake? No. What is that question? Who are these people? Right? Anyone who's going to tell me how I should live my life is so a part of that patriarchy. I'm not about that. But I would also tell them to read the definition of feminism, which really just means equality for men and women. So, if you have a problem with that, you're obviously a toolbag.

Welp, there you have it, folks: Weaver is a proud supporter of gender equality and she's not here to bake you a f*#$ing cake. I love it. Watch the 22-year-old deliver her perfect response at the 1:15 mark below.

If Weaver's refreshingly candid remarks have grabbed your attention (and I certainly hope they have), here's everything you need to know about her music: Her current single, "OctaHate" (which is available on iTunes and Spotify now), is unlike anything you've heard on the radio before (in a good way). I'd classify it as catchy and emotional power pop. Yup, that sounds about right. Check it out below.

Weaver's debut album, The Fool , drops on June 16. She worked on the upcoming LP with big names like Benny Blanco (Katy Perry, Britney Spears, Kesha), Cashmere Cat (Ariana Grande), and Charli XCX. Simply put, she's definitely worthy of your time and attention.
