How Does Nina Dobrev Feel About Ian's Wedding?
Once upon a time, we lived in a world in which we could 'ship Delena both on and off television. Before Nikki Reed, Ian Somerhalder and Nina Dobrev were dating, and it was so unbearably cute that a lot of people had trouble accepting it when the pair broke up and Somerhalder married Nikki Reed instead. Between Somerhalder's surprise decision to get married and Dobrev's even more surprising decision to leave The Vampire Diaries, people inevitably began to wonder if the two events were somehow related. Perhaps Dobrev was still carrying a torch for her costar and former beau? Those rumors are officially D.O.A. now that Dobrev has opened up about Somerhalder and Reed's wedding — and she is nothing if not happy for them.
"When I heard about the wedding, I thought it was beautiful," said Dobrev, according to the Huffington Post. "They look happy and I am happy, and so I don't see why there should be a problem with that. The drama is in the media, it's not with us. But of course, we're on a teen drama show, everyone's going to look for drama. If there's no drama, there's nothing to write about. I just ignore it." As utterly shocking as it is that the general public would invent a potential feud where there was never one (except not really), it's so great to hear Dobrev clearing the air for more reasons than one.
In the first place, it's pretty insulting to Dobrev to imply that she would make a drastic career move like quitting the show that turned her into a star just because Somerhalder married someone else — especially considering the pair parted ways two years ago. Sure, that makes a more interesting story than the truth, which is that she is pursuing other acting (and even directing) opportunities, but it denies Dobrev the dignity of her choice and implies that she makes her decisions not independently but as reactions to her ex-boyfriend's actions and life. I mean, really. She's not a Manic Pixie Dream Girl in any male wish-fulfillment movie. She does have a life outside of what Somerhalder is doing.
In the second place, it's pretty insulting to Somerhalder and Reed to make their wedding about Dobrev to begin with. Inventing a narrative in which Dobrev is bitter and angsty and crying because the two are happy and married takes focus away from the fact that they are happy and married and adds unnecessary drama and complications to their lives where there shouldn't be. After all, Dobrev is friends with both Reed and Somerhalder, so why would she be upset that they found love with each other? Surely that would have come up a lot earlier than after the wedding? It's not like Somerhalder and Reed have exactly been hiding their love.
Most importantly, I'm glad that Dobrev is putting an end to these rumors here and now because she was dangerously close to becoming the Jennifer Aniston in a Brangelina situation. The world loves Somerhalder and Reed together, and they seem incredibly in love with one another. With two years separating Dobrev from the time in which she was involved with Somerhalder, the fact that her name is still being brought up in connection with his makes it clear that the world loves to invent a good love triangle that they can talk about for years to come. Aniston divorced Pitt 10 years ago, and people are still bringing her up whenever he or Angelina Jolie do, well, anything. I'd hate for that to become Dobrev's fate as well.
So now that we've heard from Dobrev herself that the wedding was beautiful and there is no drama to be found here, let's move on to brighter things — like stalking her post–Vampire Diaries career and wondering if Reed will be making a cameo on the show as a love interest for Damon anytime soon. It wouldn't be the first time TVD has done such a thing. (Lookin' at you, Paul Wesley and Torrey DeVitto.)
