Dr. West, Dr. Kanye West. That's right, the rapper known for his ego and being extremely opinionated is now a doctor. OK, not a medical doctor, but Kanye West received an honorary doctorate from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) on Monday, which means West now has another thing to brag and rap about.
According to an email sent by SAIC to Complex, an honorary doctorate isn't given to just anyone, but handed out to "influential individuals" who earned "this distinguished award through their work, which is always imaginative and aesthetically rich, and sometimes also provocative and controversial, shifting the cultural landscape in significant ways." Also, recipients are "remarkable examples of creative success and determination, who are often inspirations to our students, faculty, and entire SAIC community."
Before receiving the prestigious honor, on Sunday, West provided a lecture to students, who also asked him questions about music, fashion, and art. Is all of this bringing back memories to that time West spoke at Oxford University? Yeah, I thought so.
As with most things West is involved in, not everyone has been supportive of the rapper receiving such an award, especially since previous recipients include Jeff Koons, Marina Abramovic, and Yoko Ono. I'm sure he isn't letting the haters get him down, because, after all, this is Kanye West we're talking about. Knowing him, he'll just express his feelings about his new honorary doctorate through music. I can hear West's new song now. I think it's going to be titled "Just Call Me Dr. West."
Of course, West's wife, Kim Kardashian, is super proud of her man, as she posted the following on Twitter.
If you want, you can read his entire speech here, where he talks about being "sorry" ("'I'm sorry' is something you can use a lot, it gives you the opportunity to give your opinion, apologize for it, and give your opinion again.") among other interesting and confusing things.
