This Is The One Thing Taylor Will Never Do
Over the course of her career, Taylor Swift has made a habit of doing things that no one expected: breaking practically every record there is; switching from country to pop, and adding in some rap and EDM; making friends with every celebrity on the planet, including once-enemy Kanye West. Yet for all the singer's surprise achievements, there is one thing that will probably never happen during her career: writing a book.
According to Swift, becoming an author is not on her to-do list, and probably won't be anytime in the future. That might seem surprising, considering that the singer's writing is one of the most praised aspects of her music, but her reasons make sense. Her writing, she wrote, only has two forms — those of her song lyrics, of which she gave several examples, and those of the Tumblr variety, which consist of the all-caps, hash-tagged, emoji-filled variety. Or, in her words:
"But we all know that my writing falls into 2 categories.
1) “You made a rebel of a careless man’s careful daughter”“I’ll watch your life in pictures like I used to watch you sleep, and I feel you forget me like I used to feel you breathe.”“And you call me up again just to break me like a promise, so casually cruel in the name of being honest.”
Or
2) #POP TART SQUAD 4 LYFE #cant find my chill ever #SHIFTY SWIFTY STRIKES AGAIN #food network is our friend #no its Becky #WHY CANT I EVER CALM DOWN
There is no in between."
In the notes for the post, Swift went on to further explain her choice, saying that she should "probably best stick to songs and Tumblr," because "who knows which form the book would take."
Well, can't fault her for knowing her strengths. With reasoning like that, it's perfectly understandable if the star keeps her writing to the forms it already has, although fans certainly wouldn't mind if she popped out a book written entirely in hashtags and choruses. Plus, Swift is plenty busy as is with her main career, and it's doubtful she'd even have time to write a book if she wanted to, in-between recording new music, going on tour, and keeping Meredith and Olivia entertained.
Still: how great would it be if she changed her mind and wrote a book one day? Whatever it was, whether a memoir, advice guide, or even a thinly-veiled autobiographical novel (let's be real — Swift's never been the best at keeping her "fiction" murky), fans would eat it up. Who wouldn't want a deeper look into Swift's mind, especially if it came (as it obviously would) with cat stickers and scented bookmarks?
It's a good thing, then, that the singer hasn't ruled the option out completely. After noting that she should probably stick with the writing she currently does, she also hashtagged #FOR NOW — meaning that the possibility of a book, while unlikely, isn't totally out of the question. Swift fans, get to work: if the begging of just a few fans on Tumblr got her to consider writing a book in the first place, the polite pleas of a couple thousand of them might be the inspiration she needs to actually get going.
